  1. The steal of all of this was Garland. One of the best 5v5 in the league. He doesn’t play on the #1 PP and his work and puck possession along the boards is incredible and underrated. I think it’s because of his height 5’8 that people think of him as an afterthought but he’s really an unsung hero.

  2. OEL’s contract ISN’T that bad. He’s a top 4 D. Look around the league. Top 4 D’s are making big money. 3 years ago I’d agree with you, but in 2022 his contract isn’t terrible.

  3. The losers we dumped contracts are expiring, oel will burden us for many more years to come. Was a bad trade and we will end up retaining 50% if we find a team stupid enough to take it off our hands.

  4. Worse trade Erickson contracts almost finished now added another oel Gave up a first picked we could of have capspace now. Benning just Bad restructure the cap

  5. Dude , new management and now a new direction. It is what it is . Don’t complain now dude

  6. Benning left a minefield. Can't go there, can't do that. Can have a really good team, but not a great one. Have to clear the mine field first. OEL is a good D man. Over paid, yes. The team is like they took my left nut and now I don't think it was worth it. It's like a big WoW, for short term gains and we are not that good to risk future success. Can still do well, but would have to be lucky. Kind of funny, long term sabotage. Like the saying what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Herb Brookes story. Miracle on ice.

  7. Even if he plays fairly good OEL until 2027 is basically a big, ugly tattoo of Jim Benning's face between the boobs of this team for the next five years.

  8. This trade was excellent and was a response to fan pressure to be rid of the players who were shipped out and the teams needs

  9. benning was on the verge of getting rid of 3 of his worst signings and he traded them in for 2 bad ones. bad in that they knee-capped the team financially and didn't make the team a contender. that, and picking juolevi over tkachuk sums up benning as a GM and i am sure he'll never get another GM job.

  10. Garland is not 5'10 lol. He is more like 5'6. He even admitted that in an interview. He said they must of measured him while on skates haha

  11. in hindsight, should’ve kept tanev and let the 3 contracts expire instead cuz OEL, though he is very good for this team makes a lot of cap problems for the team

  12. Benning caved in to the cries of Eriksson's contract and traded that away for an even worse contract in OEL's. I feel bad for OEL – he did nothing wrong himself and even as his abilities decline, he continues to play hard and gives the team what he has, but his contract is just soooooo disabling to the team. I like Garland's energy and intensity, but if he doesn't finish his chances better, I would just see him as a middle-six player and there may be cheaper options out there.

  13. if these trades weren't made. Bennin would still be gm i think. Worth it?

  14. Keep in mind, while he wasn't able to help get the team over the hump considering the circumstances last season, OEL was NOT the reason the team missed the playoffs last post-season either

  15. Almost completely agree with this take; Garland (in on a lot of trade rumours, for ??? some ??? reason!) is fantastic. But… a little more patience by The Aquilini's, and the mess Benning put the Canucks into would be all gone. Of course, in the short meantime that Benning had left here, he would have found NEW ways to screw the team up anyway, so, there's that as well, even if he never managed the OEL trade; it would have been something else (and I do think there was significant direction from ownership too). I am hoping, that FINALLY, ownership has given the full reigns over to the Alvin / Rutherford group, and will let HOCKEY PEOPLE run the team for a while.

As for what to do now, after the fact? I don't think OEL's contract, let alone the body himself, can be moved very easily (does he still have his No Move deal transferred to The Canucks? I think so…) I think the only deal is trying to GIVE AWAY Tyler Myers instead, if possible… WITHOUT, hopefully, adding a pick as a sweetener. Just hand him to anyone willing to take him, for nothing (such as happened with Pacioretty). That would be a starting move, and allow resigning Horvat and Miller, for now. Canucks would just have to suffer the growing pains on D, playing Rathbone, Dermott, Burroughs, et al., until they can find or develop a legitimate core top 4 D-line. Cheers!

  16. s for the rest of the team, well, who cares; because, JUST DON'T TELL ME – PLEEEEEEEEEASSSSE!!! – that someone like Luke "I'm a career 3rd Pairing D-man" Schenn , is going to be getting 1ST PAIRING MINUTES with Hughes… PLEASE!!!!! Whatever other problems Vancouver need to address, getting a 1ST PAIRING D-MAN to play with Hughes, is the #1 TOP PRIORITY, period. Play OEL with Hughes, for that matter, and let him cover for Hughes rushing up the ice. At least he's a legit top 4 D-man still, deserving of those minutes. Let the bottom 4 fall where they may, as OEL and Hughes play 28 minutes a game.

  17. Benning swung for the fences and pulled a Mighty Casey. There is no joy in Mudville…
