Kakko and Laffy are being held back, and that is by design (no one could be this foolish by mistake). Rangers are in serious cap trouble and they can't have a big contract on either of these 2 players. Imagine if Laffy had a break out year and needs a new contract after a 30g/50a season? Or if Kakko put in 35+ as Panarin's finisher? So it seems they are bounced around where they can be somewhat effective, but limited success. Really, Rangers can't pay another star until Panarin and Trouba's contract go away, Fox and Mika make 9+mil, they can't pay another star salary – thus the inexplicable line combinations.
Though, I suppose incompetence can be a possibility, but Kakko has only had success playing with Panarin (5 goals in ~10 games) so naturally he's played every where in the line up except with Panarin. Go figure. Rangers have 3 finishers on 1, and 3 playmakers on 2….I wonder if there's a way to improve both of these lines….? Nah…a playmaker and a finisher on the same line! I'm just being crazy now.
A Kane rental for the 2nd overall pick, a guy with the talent to become a regular 30 goal scorer in this league? I would describe that as insane. Put Kakko with Panarin now and he'll finish the year with 30. (He's already scored there, so it's not a theory). 40+ games with Z&K and he's produced 2 (unassisted) goals. He just doens't fit on that line. So naturally they'll keep him there, and keep both the lottery picks off the PP. Wouldn't want to add another 20 pts to their totals. That would drive up the price…
I know this is not directly related to the topic but after Kane’s remarks about the state of the Sabres team and management following Saturdays game, I strongly believe he may sign if Buffalo chooses to offer him a contract in the offseason.
The only thing New York Rangers need to do, is to trust their young players and let them play. The last thing they need is overaged veterans (no matter their pedigree) that they can't or shouldn't resign after this season. Frankly I am so tired of these Kane trade rumors to NYR.

There's no thought in the trade idea. The NYR are shallowest at RW. And… the NYR are carrying a 22 man roster because they do not have cap room. How do they clear cap room for Kane?
