  1. It did look bad, no way MacKinnon backs down from a guy 6 inches shorter than him, I get the fact that star players shouldn't have to drop the gloves but Matthews was lucky he had a few teammates willing to jump in…the Leafs don't really have a real tough guy in the lineup so teams can take liberties, all they have to do is wait.

  2. That smirk is gonna fade quickly once he realizes he's even more of a target now. I know he's a avoiding injuries but at least put your arms up big guy lol.

  3. Matthews should at least grab and hold. He doesn't do anything but smirk. Someone is going to Pearl Harbor that clown. Matthews won't even grab and hold when his entire line is involved.

  4. I do not advocate anyone cross checking a player in the face, really ? Drop the gloves if you has a score to settle

  5. Alternative hypotheses. What if AM had an undisclosed injury in the off season and or some more work on his wrist. This could be the rationale for the slow scoring start and not throwing hands. Why does it always have to be a high school drama narrative in the 416 about too many smirks and hoodies instead of suits.
    Ridiculous!

  6. Matthews did what he should do. Bunting and Giordano did what they should do. Good on them.

Matthews standing up for himself will do nothing. It will always be part of the oppositions game plan to get Matthews off his game, regardless as to whether or not he stands up for himself. Even if Mathews has a couple fights, it won't stop guys from coming after him. That's why you have others do it for him. Let someone else end up in the penalty box for 5 minutes, and let someone else break his hand on a helmet. You want Matthews on the ice focused on scoring goals. Period. That's his job. Everyone on the team has a different role, and fighting, or being a tough guy, is not one of them for Matthews.

Mats Sundin had two career fights in an era when there was a lot more fighting. Big skill guy like Matthews. I'd guess Matthews will likely end up around that number by the end of his career.

If anything, it's Keefe's job to ensure there are some deterrents in the line up so that liberties aren't being taken with a very soft Leaf team.

  7. When the leader of the team is scared of a man half his size it creates an odd dynamic in the room. Auston is a great hockey player but not a great leader and not a guy that will sacrifice everything to win. Another first round exit…….then what?

  8. Lol. He starts something he can't finish. What a whiny little princess…

  9. Matthews is a coward. Crosby, Ovechkin, McKinnon have had to stick up for themselves. Instead they allow Matthews 39 year old Dad to fight his battle and if Gio broke his hand then what with a defense that is already in shreds. All he needs to do is do it a couple of times and the message will get across that he isn't turtling. Saturday is the Bruins, I can hear Brad Marchand already licking his lips and sharpening his spear.

  10. Make no mistake some fans are gonna defend Matthews and that’s fines. But to see Matthews stand around while his teammates went to bat for him. Matthews was the only one standing around. But to be honest this entire thing is on woke Dubas who refuses to insert toughness into the lineup. Just look in Montreal you touch Slavkovsly and Xhekaj comes looking for you. I can hardly wait for Saturday when the big bad Bruins face the leafs. The leafs are the softest team in the league and the opposition know they can take liberties with Matthews,Marner,Nykander,Tavares because the leafs have nobody to keep opposing teams honest.

  11. The problem is that "skilled" players like Matthews start things, and then never have to finish them. Crosby has never fought anyone he's lose to. If he's tied up with someone who would pound him into dust in a fight; he either skates them toward his fighter teammates, or cheap shots them with hid gloves on.

  12. I think things changed for Sidney after he had a very serious concussion. Being able to recover from serious injuries and close calls is why people change the way they do and start caring more. There are many skill players who try to pick fights in the league but I do not think it makes them care more about their game than recovering from a serious accident. Tavares had that concussion the other year and now he looks much more serious knowing it could have had a terrible impact on his professional career. Close calls and recovery is more important to people than winning or losing fist fights.

  13. the guy gets paid to score, not fight. What would you clowns be saying if he injured himself fighting? Hmmm?

  14. the smirk and utter classlessness from Matthews is the worst part.
luring players in to get jumped from behind is so cowardly not only from Matthews but the entire leafs team.
If the star player is going to try highlight reel goals in a blowout game with 2 minutes left, he should have to defend himself.
but he's a prissy little spoiled brat so ya'll let him act like a goof and think there should be no consequences.
i bet he gets jumped in december at the rematch. flyers will be eliminated from playoffs by then, with nothing to lose.

  15. dude you made up the Lemieux thing. Nice try. You are the one having their cake and eating it too.

  16. 5-2 less than 2 minutes in the game. What’s the point? Matthews smarter than that. Beating up a midget like konecky, c’mon.

  17. Couldn't agree more with Tim. No one is asking Matthews to fight, no one wants that. But just show some sort of physical engagement in the scrum. You got 39 year old Gio taking on 2 guys… can't just stand there and smile. Even phil kessel got into it LOL.

  18. Is the same replay being shown out there man? I'm confused here I don't see what the problem is here. Konechny gave Mathews a slash..Matthews slashed back and guys immediatly came to his defense before a fight could start. So Krupp( former enforcer, never scored 60) comments . Really? Very weird. If Matthews dropped the gloves and ended up with an injury everyone would be shitting on his teammates and him. People should focus on more important issues with this team. To add , Matthews had surgery on his wrist and he probably received health care advice from his surgeon. Nobody knows his medical situation. What if he also has a clause in his contract regarding fighting? The guy is a 60 goal scorer and one of the highest paid guys in the league. The only time you fight is if someone clearly is going to take your head off and you have no choice but to defend yourself. Come on man.
