That was a massive and gutsy win from the Canes. You can tell how good they truly are when you see that they're the club that's elite enough to end hot streaks regularly. They did it to the Flyers earlier this season, and they pulled it off yet again.
To his credit…hurricanes have lightning. I’m leaving.

Awful officiating gives Carolina the win tonight. Yes, you read that right. When the Sabres have been battling terrible officiating and it's the main reason they have been where they've been over the past decade plus, you are beyond frustrated. It's been a nice ride, but I can't take it anymore. Keep an eye out for home Sabres games towards the end of this month, because I may very well take care of this issue while attending. The Sabres are NOT going to get better/have consistency until their is a complete overhaul of the officiating system for Sabres games. We know the league is a business, but it literally makes no sense they keep treating Buffalo the way they do with how strong the Buffalo market is, but here we are. Enough is enough; who is going to go head to head with the league, because we know the Sabres organization wont? I know he won't, but I'd like to see Shannon do a video on this. Anyone that does a small amount of research on this, will/should see how big of an issue this really is.
For as good as the Sabres have been, they are clearly not on the same level as Carolina.

Carolina remains the much-better team vs. us same as last season.
Buffalo’s quick start dissipated against Carolina’s ferocious forecheck and outstanding D. Sabres’ couldn’t hold onto pucks, lost too many face-offs, too many stretches w/o much energy.
The ref gave Carolina one PP chance they didn’t deserve and didn’t call a slash which broke Cozens’ stick on a great scoring chance.
But clearly the Canes ramped things up in the 3rd vs. tiring. Even if Jokiharju-Samuelsson-Lyubushkin were playing, Carolina w/ that same effort beats us 7 of 10 times. I’m still surprised they didn’t go to the Finals last year; they don’t this one either, oh boy…
Buffalo was fortunate to keep things close after it was 3-2 but one more lost F/O sealed it. And those sloppy giveaways thanks to being hesitant in their own end, after looking so good taking the 2-1 lead…sucked.
(It’s already corrected to Hurricanes by the time I’m seeing the video, but hey let’s keep the trend going)

Dominant performance by Aho, and especially on a night when the rest of the team needed someone to drag them into the game. Canes looked sluggish and sloppy early (to be expected on the back-to-back to some extent). Was glad to see them eventually put together a game.

You weren't imagining the hats coming down before the goal. I was at the game and there were definitely hats thrown as soon as Aho passed the blue line.

What are penalties tonight? I’m sorry and I hate complaining about officiating but Buffalo got absolutely screwed tonight. That Kotkaniemi sucker punch should be looked at by the league. The missed slash on Cozens would’ve been a goal. Kotkaniemi with a dive…. It was from opening puck drop.
Still a little concerned about the Canes. The defense, goaltending, and PK have been extremely suspect so far this season. Could just be early season issues, but it needs to get fixed soon before it really starts costing them games.
The more I see of Kotkaniemi, the more I like him. Yes, he's never gonna be the dude who sets the scoresheet on fire. But he plays good defense, he wins a lot of faceoffs and he's not afraid to get his nose dirty, whether that means camping out in front of the net to screen the goalie or getting in the face of somebody who's messing with one of the Canes' smaller more finesse players. He plays a tough, honest, two-way game. On paper, I'd rather see him as the #3C instead of the 2, but in reality, him and Staal are pretty much interchangeable anyway with how they're being deployed.
most annoying part of that 0.1 goal was that it gave the canes another PPG allowed, their eighth game in the last nine where they allowed one. the only game in that stretch they didn’t was a 6-2 loss where they took one penalty all game. if you remember that was by far the best PK in hockey last season and they bring back almost the entire unit save for trocheck really (and with staal, aho, stastny, stepan they have plenty of centers to handle that role). tonight was the best their kill has looked all year, it stunk to see them still get dinged with 0.1 left.
but man, what a player dahlin is. so much talent on that buffalo roster, and the canes were really impressive in keeping their stars quiet – thompson especially. they absolutely smothered him, despite being possibly the hottest player in the league. but buffalo is well on their way, even if they’re still a very young team learning how to win. that team is gonna be good for a while.
just hoping my canes are finally ready to show up in the postseason this year. between necas and svech turning it up a notch and pacioretty getting added in a couple months, i really hope this is the year they take that step to legitimate contention.

If Carolina stays healthy in goal and adds Pacioretty before the playoffs start, I'm picking them to take it all. This team has lots of depth and Necas has really turned it up a notch.
