I wasn't sold on the Flamers after that Stars Series which could gone either way. Mind you when you have McDazzle in beast mode and Kane the recipient the right team won.
Jaa. Flames are a good team. Will they never be a Stanley Cup team? Probably not.
Calgary was out coached by Edmonton plain and simple. How do you go against the Oilers and not have an immediate plan for McDavid? Sutter is a great coach, but old and stubborn. Finally in games 4 and 5 he had a plan for playing against McDavid and Calgary was in both of those games. Game 2 and 3 were embarrassing to watch as a Flames' fan. Sutter needed a plan for McDavid game #1 and he didn't have one until game 4. That is why the Flames lost.
Markstrom gave up 13 on right side and 9 left side. Only 1 5 hole though. But most up mid to high. I think overall even all over but maybe his weakness mid shots 13 there. I wonder how the Stat guys look at this
The Flames had a lot of trouble in the playoffs with their transition game. Many times the Flames coughed up the puck and it ended up in their back of the net. Winning in the playoffs is about the little details. I could see the frustration in coach Sutter’s face.
The flames where slow in the back end and Gaudreau and Tkachuk couldn’t match the top line of the Oilers. Sutter is good for the short term but to old school and you could see it in the Oilers series he was out coached.
Blow it all up. Time to rebuild.
Calgary is missing a #1 defenseman and center depth. Other than that, they’re built ridiculously well. But you need to get Johnny and Chucky back
another fake tough team bites the dust 🙄
Rebuild now or forever mediocrity for this team
Flames had a total collapse
They Flamed-Out fast in round 2…. Being in the West makes alot of teams seem better than they actually are. it's DEFINITELY the weaker conference.
The defence was awful. Look at all the rebounds that cost them. The Tanuv played hurt and this cost calgary. But the lack of fight in the defence allowed Edmonton players to not be afraid in front of the net
Definitely wasn't all on Marky, the number of rebound goals that went to a completely uncovered Oiler player (RNH game 4, eg.) was unacceptable. Kylington was showing it was his first big games and needs to step up. Wolf could come in and be next years Otter though to. Very interesting to see how the off season shakes out.
They should have put Vladar in for game 5 if only to mix things up for the Edmonton shooters. It was obvious they were putting every shot they could on Markstrom's glove hand. Might have push the Dmen to be a bit tougher in front of the net too. As others have said, Calgary struggled to find a higher level for the playoffs often times looking like it was just another regular season game. Changing things up might have urged them to step up and play with some more urgency.
The flames are and always will be a mediocre team, it’s dumb fan base thinks retooling the team on the fly will make them better when in reality it just keeps the mediocrity going for another decade. Johnny hobbit will never lead you to a Stanley cup
I honestly have no idea what to do if I'm the GM. The biggest thing is we don't have a star player who would carry the team to the end. We have many amazing players, but no Ovechkin, Crosby, Matthews, McDavid, MacKinnon etc. We almost do, but we don't. I have no idea how you go abouts getting a guy like that but you'd either have to get rid of some huge assets to a team who has given up on their cup chances or you pray that Tkachuk fills that role later as he is only 24 years old right now. Gaudreau could be that guy too, but at 29, clock begins ticking a bit.
Defence is another issue where our best defenceman was a brutally injured Tanev. Ras and Hanifin can be huge later but it will take a bit of time. We need a star defenceman that WILL shut down top lines right now. Perhaps you offload some great forward talent that put up amazing regular season points and minimal playoff points for that.
I really like Markstrom and would keep giving him a chance, but the worry is now in motion due to that consistently horrendous performance against a division/franchise rival that we will need to beat one day to win a cup. I just don't know what other tendy out there would bring us a better chance. Literally Edmonton is the only team to have truly exposed Markstrom this year. Maybe just don't play him against Edmonton? Throw Vladar in there? Wolf when he gets here one day? Idk…
Ultimately this team is amazing and I would like to keep most of them for a realistic scenario. However, it seems like we should offload non-playoff performers for some guys who know how to step up in playoff atmospheres, as well as (if by complete magic) acquire that key star player that has the experience and leadership to charge playoffs. I could be out to LUNCH on this one, but peeerhaps we can look at Ovechkin?!?! I could easily see how that may not work, but my gut feeling is interested on exploring that. Playoff winner, consistent goal scorer, leadership, would only need him 2-3 years at least a we finish this core's run… Like I said, could be worth a little bit of thought.
As for now I battle hockey depression and try to get stoked for next year and root for their amazing AHL team!
It’s definitely possible Vladar would have been terrible against Edmonton, but it’s also possible he’d be fine. There’s plenty examples of young goalies rising to the challenge in the playoffs and winning their teams series (Matt Murray is perhaps the best recent example). I think he at least deserved a chance to prove his worth.
I think we should sell high with at least one piece of our top line. Treliving was right when he said ‘to stay the same is death’.
We have a lot of great pieces on the team and on the way. I think these problems we have in the playoffs need to be addressed. And I think it comes from some big time shakeup.
It would have been nice if we could have looked at the Calgary Flames on the golf course as well….. GO Flames GO🤤
My Calgary fans have no faith in the GM pulling this off for Calgary, and as an Oilers fan I'd actually be pretty sad about that. Our battles these last two years have been legendary, and I hope we still will. Though it would be easier for me to cheer for Calgary if Chucky finds a new team.
I dunno what to think if I was a Calgary fan on that loss. They were obviously coached very well, they were obviously able to score and all season their defense and goalie were great. But Woodcroft's adjustments really caused havoc for the Flames, especially when they were unable to stop the Oilers' star power, namely McDavid. I dunno how you stop that guy so I don't know if it's right to say "we tried our best." What was wrong is that Calgary blamed their loss on McDavid, they felt that by stopping McDavid they could win, and that crumbled for two reasons: reason number one is you can't stop him, and reason number 2 is that for the few shifts they did the other Oilers lines came out and played great, particularly Hyman. Calgary was a little slow too, you can point out that, I would also point out how exposed Markstrom was this series. Man could've played with no glove and it would not have made a difference. So I dunno what to tell Flames fans, I dunno what they do to combat this kind of play in the future, but I will say that they didn't lose because of Coleman's disallowed goal, and they didn't lose because of one man.
Tough decisions to be made by Treliving. I think one of the main players will move on, but I don't know who, and at least one other fairly important player will also be gone. Changes need to be made because the Flames should still be good next year.
Calgary needs to fix their defence. Forwards and goalies were great. Defence is what killed them in my opinion.
I think they were capable of beating Edmonton. It got into their heads though. Marky was visibly nervous, and that trickled through to everybody else. They were also missing Tanev’s steady leadership on defence.
Sometimes you wonder if personal things get to players too. Lindholm’s gf is some influencer and her posts made it seem like she was pretty depressed and itching to get back to Sweden
I think the impact of it has been a bit overblown, but Tanev being out for most of the Edmonton series definitely hurt the D in a big way. Edmonton still likely wins with him in, but not the domination we saw
In the big picture, any Canadian Team can go far in playoffs, bar two. Both the Flames and Leafs are horrid in the playoffs. We can't say why either-complete question mark.
I don't think Toffoli helped the Flames as much as was expected. But I still like the deal.
Personally I think they need to let Kylington go. Keep Zadorov and Gudbransson together and bring Stone in to play with Tanev
I think the performance in these playoffs was not such a surprise, they played at 100% for the entire regular season while most teams play around 80%, calgary can't raise their level of play but the opposition can
