  1. I’ve seen both play and I can tell you that McDavid is better than Gretzky was. Gretzky played when the goalie was the smallest guy on the ice, not the biggest. If you had a 0.900 save percentage you were a Vezina candidate, not on your way to the AHL. Gretzky played at a time when only half of the league could skate. Now everyone can skate. If you dropped McDavid in the 80’s he’d have gotten 200 goals a year. We’d think of Gretzky like we think of Yzerman, “He’d have been the best player of his time, if it weren’t for McDavid.” P.S. I live in Edmonton, and I’m a monster fan of the Oilers.

  2. I did watch Gretzky play I've been watching hockey since the mid 70s and I agree with you it's not just goalies were bad the whole defensive structure was very loose back in those days (if you weren't playing in the Soviet Union) and dmen were generally aggressive and not concerned with proper coverage.

  3. Not even close
Disparity between points of #2 leading scorer says enough
Gretzky didnt have the same training, equipment technology, no center line, clutching and grabbing.
Mcdavid is the equivalent to pavel bure. Exciting to watch but not the best of all time

  4. IMO Gretzky just had a knack for doing the exactly the right thing at exactly the right time. McDavid's general skill set is better the Gretzky's. But you can't really argue against Gretzky's ability to just get the numbers that he did. It wasn't as flashy as Connor but Gretzky dominated the hockey world like no other. Both generationally lifetime players and I'm just glad Connor can play as well as he can cause it really is entertaining to watch.

  5. Let’s not get carried away now…..Gretzky score 50 in 39, over 200pts 4 times and 92 goals in 1 season.

  6. Can’t have a discussion about best ever with very limited playing career.

  7. If you forget or take out all the stats and accomplishments, then you are basically basing it off of hype. Aaron Rodgers is not better than Tom Brady. He is just an over hyped talent QB!!!

  8. Just like other sports like UFC the bar only goes up over time. So in general everyone in NHL is playing at a higher bar than the 80’s. Gretzky was leaps and bounds above his peers just like McDavid. But in order for McDavid to be leaps and bounds above today’s NHL means he’s that much more skilled. Realistically he may never attain Gretzky’s numbers and after McDavid has been around 15 years there will be something to compare. McDavid has the most potential we’ve ever seen. I hope the Oilers win the cup and keep their coach for years to come. There is something special going on with the Oilers right now. All the right people for success. There’s a certain chemistry right now over there where everyone is making each other better and a bar to live up to set by McDavid. What an amazing moment in hockey this is.

  9. Of course he is. But best in an 'ahead of their time' sense matters a whole lot more than some would consider. We have way more players, way more competition, way more history, more organized coaching, more tiering, years of fine tuning youth hockey and everything involving teaching and Conditioning. Players play against and with better players, with a higher level of parity at every age and level, with and against better coaching, with better equipment, better technology for teaching, better understanding of what the numbers say the right play is, better understanding and culture of taking care of the body. McDavid would score 12 goals a game in Gretzky's era but you could still argue for Gretz legitimately absolutely. I mean who doesn't talk about championships in that conversation as well, winning?

  10. "big game" guy? literally going into the conference final for the first time in his career. maybe wait until you bust connor coomer

  11. McDavid is great. Probably 3rd best forward after Gretz and Mario on pure talent. Mario was better from what Ive seen. Gretz thought the game like no other and it doesnt show up on highlights. McDavid wins some cups and Ill change my mind perhaps.

  12. Nah that’s bullshit , 80’s goaltenders we’re way better than now , they had smaller pads and bigger nets .

  13. i think if you put the worst player from todays nhl in an 80's nhl, they would lead the league in points. hockey is the only sport where the game has completely changed over the years in every aspect.

  14. I'm about to do a quick McDavid run, anyone want anything? I'm thinking.. big mac no pickle.. 1 cheeseburger with only ketchup.. and a caramel oreo McDavid for later. Stick it in the freeze for now

  15. 1. McDavid now >> Gretzky now (can barely skate now)
    2. McDavid peak > Gretzky peak (time travel McDavid would destroy 80s hockey)
    3. McDavid's superiority vs his peers < Gretzky's superiority vs his peers
    4. McDavid's superiority vs his peers < Lemieux's superiority vs his peers

You need to take into account how Gretzky changed the way the game is played.
And BTW, I'd be interested how a healthy peak Peter Forsberg would do in today's NHL – he'd still be an absolute warrior.

  16. This man said hes already better than gretzky with out ever seeing him play.
Mcdavid is fantastic but hes not close yet.

  17. The most Stanley Cup : Henri Richard : 11, Jean Béliveau :10 as a Player + 7 as Hockey Personnel = 17 times on the Stanley Cup, Yvan Cournoyer : 10 Stanley Cup. Gretzky : 4 Stanley Cup same as Mike Bossy. Even Gretzky's friend Mark Messier got 6 cups 5 with the Oilers + 1 with the Rangers. Will still waiting for Connor McDavid First Stanley Cup, it took 16 seasons to Alex Ovechkin to get his first one . Marcel Dionne played 18 seasons in the NHL. He never won the cup his less talented brother Gilbert Dionne won the Stanley Cup with Montreal in 1992-1993 on his first season in the NHL . Sometimes you got to be at the right place at the right time!
