I am happy the Habs drafted a few guys out of the OHL last draft. My recollection was it was the worst first round for OHL talent in many years. Did the OHL suddenly fall behind as a development league? Did having a full year off impact 17 year olds more than any other league? Will that lost year result in lost development or only delayed?
Depending on how those questions are answered, it could mean there was some ‘market inefficiency’ for OHL draftees and the Canadiens could benefit from that.
As it specifically related to your question, I watched Rohrer before the draft and really liked his confidence. When you look at his draft interview he looks like a 15-year old. He was (one of?) the youngest players drafted last year. Loved the pick from the start.
Guindon is a bit more of an unknown commodity to me. But I did see an interview with him where he said he went through growing pains early on last year (his rookie season) and after he adjusted he thought he played well. His production in the second half also suggests this could be true and if he had produced at that rate all season I suspect he would have been picked higher.
All in all, two great prospects who are probably still pretty low on the prospect chart, but with all the context, wouldn’t surprise me if one popped and became regarded as one of the Habs top prospects in a year or two.
Great for their development. Always hard to tell if junior success will translate to an NHL regular. Aren’t these guys also on the older end of the age spectrum?
