  1. I'm an old guy who as a teenager also saw Bobby Orr in action. Makar is the only defenceman to come close. They don't dominate games, they take them over.

  2. Don't forget he earned the Calder and Hoby Baker as well as Norris and Conn Smythe. I am a longtime Avs fan and have seen some great defensemen on this team. Bourque and Blake on same team, Ozolinsh , Foote. Makar has the same"game takeover" ability and mentality that Forsberg did in his prime. And he is 23!! QB on one of the best power play units in hockey and shines even with 4 other great players on the ice. Then he plays the shutdown role when needed against the other team's best line. He makes everyone around him better as well. so fun to watch the Avs the last 4 years!

  3. if he simply keeps playing as he does now without getting any better he will go down as one of the greats… however I suspect he will only keep improving.

  4. I usually don’t like ‘tooting my own horn’ as they say. But I just love the fact I said this dude was the next Bobby Orr after his first 18/19 playoffs appearance. And everyone said I was crazy and unrealistic, and that Fox and Mcavoy were better…..lol. It was never even close.

This dude is LITERALLY the next Bobby Orr….To put those kind of crazy numbers up in a much lower scoring era with light-years better goaltending, is beyond insane. The way he skates and moves so well laterally, all while being a shot-threat or a play-making threat, is insane. Not to mention his back-checking ability. It’s all the type of stuff Orr use to do. But now we are seeing the evolved version of that. Congrats Cale! It was amazing watching you back in the AJHL….And you’re proving the nay-sayers wrong one game at a time.

  5. I said this after the Avs cup run, Makar isn't the best defenseman in the NHL, he's the best player in the NHL full stop.

  6. Makar has broken the game on so many levels, but because he’s a D man he’s still too underrated. Not only does he consistently rob superstar scorers, he makes offensive plays on the same level as them. He’s an absolutely goated player and has the ability to reset every defensemen record in the books. I hope he stays healthy and safe. My favourite player in the NHL and grew up in the same city as me 🙂

  7. He's fantastic, but he takes alot of credit that MacKinnon deserves

  8. Don't get me wrong. Makar is incredibly talented, but I wonder how much of an effect certain players on the Avs have had in helping him.

  9. I believe that he is an amazing defenseman, probably the best in the league right now, however I still believe that Orr is the number 1 defenseman in nhl history. If Makar can win an Art Ross, then I may start to think otherwise. Still no denying that he is incredible. Also remember, that Orr played in an era with such inferior equipment and medical procedures. Orr did all that he did with only one good knee for a majority of his career and on skates that were basically a leather boot with a hunk of metal attached to it.

  10. All this hype reminds me of Erik Karlson right before he fell off a cliff.
Similar style of play, similar rush tendencies, and similar skating.
Hope he can keep it up, but im getting flashbacks. Lol

  11. Been watching and playing hockey across seven decades. Kale Makar is today's Bobby Orr but he's no Bobby Orr. How many fights has he had? Bobby Orr was hunted every night he stepped on the ice. Problem was, nobody could catch him unless he was in the corners. Makar also doesn't have guys hacking at his knees like Orr did. But Makar is the best Dman in the league today and it's a different era. The kid is great for sure.

  12. Oh and let me add, Bobby Orr grew the sport of hockey by over 800%, more than what Babe Ruth did for baseball. That's why Makar isn't what Orr was to the game but he is the best defenseman in the league now because he can ay 200 feet like Orr did. And Ray Bourque and other D of that era played over 30 mins on average. I watched Bourque play 50 minutes a game a few times.

  13. hes very good but anything can happen so i dont know about calling him the best yet as if he were to dip in his play he wouldnt but it doesnt look like it. we will see

  14. I find it interesting that many of the top players in the NHL have last names that start with M. Such as McDavid, Matthews, Mackinnon, Makar, Marner and Marchand.

  15. Speaking of Sergei Zubov, he lead the Rangers in scoring during the 1994 Stanley Cup champion season with 89 points. He and Brian Leech were arguably the best pair of power play point men in NHL history. He was traded to the Penguins for Ulf Samuelson who was then about six years senior. The aging Mark Messier had lost his protector, Adam Graves, and engineered the trade from behind the scenes because he wanted to surround himself with tougher players. Leech and Zubov both had other regular partners, but they were often put on the ice together late in games when the team was trailing by a goal. This trade has to go down in history as one of the worst ever in the NHL.

  16. Exceptional analysis, Mr. Makar is definitely, at this pace, going to be the number one defenseman of all time.

I appreciate his skating, as many replies below reflect how important skating is to Hockey, which is why in days past if you could not skate you were put in goal, lol

  17. I am surprised Paul Coffey isn't on the top 5 list of D to reach 200 points. He scored 48 goals and 138 points in one season. Of course he was on the high scoring Oilers back in the day with you know who but yeah Cale Makar is pretty good

  18. What's even worse is that Makar also can play shut down defense. He's legitimately a better Bobby Orr.

  19. Bobby Orr changed the game in the 60s and 70s with his skating, too. Feels right that a D-man does it again.

  20. best ever in this era yes . best ever we will see at the end of his career. with his accomplishments were already talkign hall of fame

  21. He deserves to be paid as much as Karlsson and Doughty lol. 9M a year for him is a steal.

  22. He’s so good. Seems like he has it all. So lucky we got him! I can imagine how the other teams feel now passing him up. But also colorado is a great development team. Now just gotta get our other #4 pick heathy and developed fully. Look at what val natushkin did coming to colorado from Dallas… it’s insane

  23. If Cale stays on pace we will witness history again, time after time

  24. no doubt a generational talent and best D right now, but …. when he wins the art ross trophy twice, 8 norris trophies in a row and has a plus minus of >124 in a single season then he can be considered best ever.

  25. He's going to go down as probably the best defenseman of this generation and he'll probably be considered a top-10 defenseman all-time but no one is touching Orr. Makar got to 200 points faster but Orr almost scored 50 one season. He scored 120+ points 4 times. Orr will always be the greatest.

  26. What is more impressive that Karlson is leading all D-men and playing for the Sharks.
Makar is exceptional, but its highly unlikely he would be putting up the same numbers for the Sharks.

  27. Hampus Lindholm is having a sneakily amazing season so far for Boston. Tied for 2nd in scoring in the team, on the highest scoring team in the league.

  28. Hard to compare when this dudes not even playing the same game

  29. The guy is an absolute beast. Best current D man by a mile. He will be the eventual GOAT.

  30. Not to shit on an incredible players and Although I do agree Makar is probably the most offensively talented defenseman I've ever seen, Colorado was already a Cup Contender before he even started playing so it should be considered lol

  31. Flat out, no bones about it: Cale Makar is to the modern D-Man as Bobby Orr was to the lead into the modern era of Hockey.

Bobby Orr defined how defense should be played, literally changing Hockey as we know it, with unprecedented presence and dominance on the ice. Cale Makar is the same.

We are watching history in the making, a generational event that we are so lucky to see. Hockey will never be the same as Cale Makar shows the way to the next generation of D-Men, so long as he is able to keep a long career.

Long or short, none can deny that it will be a prosperous one.

  32. As a 42 year old die hard Red Wings fan I can’t legally say Makar is amazing but…
