Oiler suck real bad Mason would have made a great coach they are to soft bring in some grit
They don't work as a unit all five skaters they always abandoned the front of the net. The defense always trys to pass through the middle high risk passes. When there is no play they don't dump the puck in the corners or out of their zone. So they just hold on the puck and turn overs always happen when pressured.

The D is different this year without Keith and Russell. Holland was hoping Broberg and Neimo would step in. Campbell has been struggling so the goaltending hasn’t been consistent either. Of all the years I’ve been a fan I’ve noticed the oilers usually get better after December. I’m sure it will be better after the new year. It’s early in the season right now. Kane is out right now as well, he’s our only grit cause Kassian is gone but unfortunately he’s injured until March. Chychrun would be nice but someone needs to go. It’s too bad Kenny signed some bad contracts that has left the team so tight in cap space. Maybe if Campbell can’t find his form they can bring Smith out of LTIR to play, get Keith out of retirement and sign Russell to a minimum and they’ll be like last years roster🤔
The answer to the question is that the Oilers defense has always sucked.
Last year, the difference was that when the coaching change and bump occurred, it coincided with a dramatic improvement in Mike Smith's save percentage that carried them through the rest of the season and into the playoffs. Last year the Oilers were among the bottom-third of the NHL in chance prevention, and that has not changed this year. The biggest difference is that the goalies are not making the saves at an unsustainable level, and this is exacerbated by the fact that sans Duncan Keith, they bleed even more chances this year than last season.
Instead of resigning Puljujarvi we should have acquired a quality defenseman

Oils D is a disaster…what a shocker. Been saying this since the start of the season with everyone telling me that they will out score the goals against. Crazy how both Alberta teams are hurting this year.
i think the answer to the Oilers Dmen woes is obvious. Kulak = 3 rd pairing Montreal, and they didn't want to keep him anymore. Cece – bounced by Toronto and Pittsburg ; never close to being a 1st pairing Dman; Murray = bottom pairing D and then put in the pressbox to watch Avs win the cup. That is the quality of the vets we brought in.
Rookies = Nemelienin / Broberg / Bouchard. All learning the game. Bouch is lost this year without Keith.
Is it any surprise that our D is poor? The actual NHL quality vets: Barry = never was good defensively, ever .. so no surprise. And Nurse, he bet on jumping into the play and rushing up the ice instead of becoming a tough stay at home physical player. I guess he guessed right = 9.25 mill x 8 years. But he sucks playing defense.
So who does that leave that can actually play D? NOBODY ! So the Oil will continue to be a poor to middling defensively capable blue line corps until a) they trade for some actual high performers, not cast offs like the current acquired crop, or b) until the rooks grow up. One way = quick change if we get two actual Dmen; the other = season of pain this year and beyond. Time to crank up the trade mill and get some actual top 4 guys in here, and send those other maybes on bottom pairing players on their way(s).
