  1. You are not nuts. I was describing the 3rd line to a friend the other day and I used those exact same words. They are a black hole right now. Heinen has disappeared and I am thinking we should file a missing person report. McGinn has been better than I remember him been but there is no one else where he is right now. Carter has been great at faceoffs but disappears everywhere else. His extension always puzzled me. I mean was great mean he came over last year but I didn’t see any reason to extend him mid season. And to be mean, ever since that signing he hasn’t been good. His play dropped big time right after that extension last year.

Could you have Carter take faceoffs and then have him and Heinen or McGinn switch roles?
Or what about switching Rust and McGinn. That puts everyone on a cold streak on 1 line.

Speaking of when are we going to talk about where Rust is? Right now 22 games and only 10 points. But so much worse is that he is a -10. Wow that is bad. The only person that is close is Letang at -7, after that is Kappy at -3.

  2. I wonder how much of Kaps struggles can be attributed to Carter. Not making excuses for him, just a ponderance

  3. 2 biggest mistakes in the last 2 years by Pens mgmt have been signing Carter and protecting him in the expansion draft over McCann and signing Kapanen and letting Rodriguez go. McCann and Rodriguez along with either Heinen or McGinn would make a whole lot better 3rd line.

  4. Simple solution, moved Carter to the wing and have the center taking the faceoff get kicked out of the faceoff dot everytime lmao

  5. Jeff Carter is a failure and getting him in the first place was a mistake, let alone resigning him to an extension. He is flat out horrible. Hextal’s blind allegiance to him is just one of many flaws.

  6. You realize a winger can take a face off and then take his defensive role on the wing?

  7. just a 3rd line being a 3rd line in my opinion but granted i haven't been able to watch Carter exclusively, i will try next time i get the opportunity. having a very good 3rd line is rare and usually short-lived, isn't it? even some of the better 3rd lines over the years like Staal, Kennedy, and Cooke or HBK don't last very long. Carter still has 1 more point than Rust, and Rust gets PP1 time! and Rust plays with Sid, Guentzel, Malkin, etc. meanwhile Carter's linemates are Heinen, Kappy, McGinn, etc. (all of which are capable offensively but not quite the scoring punch as Jake, Rakell, etc.) and he wins crap tons of faceoffs as you mentioned. nor is Carter expected to be a point-per-game guy or anything.

  8. I guess I need to watch closer… but Carter doesn't seem like a top 3 problem for the Pens

  9. Hey DK, I'm a biology and statistics professor and a big fan of your podcasts. After listening to this episode, I decided to crunch some numbers on the importance of faceoffs. What I found was that, in the 2022 playoffs, there was no correlation at all between faceoff win % and % of games won. So maybe keeping Carter at center for his faceoff prowess isn't the best approach here.

  10. Carts is killing it on faceoffs, is on pace for 40+ points, is killing penalties, and is +2. Give him a game off now and then, keep him healthy and he'll fire up for playoffs.
