  1. Just came back to remind everyone who said Marner was the best player on the leafs for 7 years straight……it only took 7 years for everyone else to catch on. LOL……the abuse I took from the clueless.

  2. Mitch is such a gem. The way he's handled his career in Toronto thus far is inspiring.

  3. I AM THE GOOD LUCK CHARM!!! I've been doing all the "back" "checking" on this record… at 17 games MARNER was at exactly 1/3 of the way to record held by Gretzky! THEN I WENT to the local card store… BUT I DIDN"T REALIZE, they were closed! BUT, I saw a man (the owner) in the store on the phone and he opened the door for me… I bought the ONLY and ALL full emblem TORONTO MAPLE LEAF patches (I bought the only FULL FRONT maple leaf jersey patch! THEN I went to MY NORMAL card shop in order to buy a new BECKETT… and IT"S MITCH MARNER on the cover… and we discussed and talked about the game that was happening at the moment tonight, and I said, I gotta find a way to get this sighned, even though this may be the most impossible record to ever beat. Then I went and watched the third period… I lost my phone last night IN THE SNOW SOMEWHERE, and I live in Vancouver, so snow is rare… so I could not check stats… BUT I SAT intently and I walked out after the game winning goal! knowing it was over but hoping marner assisted on the 1st goal, but he didn't, and I watched the final highlights… AND OUR BOY DID IT!! keep it coming… feed the need!!!

  4. By the way, the record of 51 consecutive games with a point could be considered to be even higher. Gretzky's 51 straight games was from the start of the 1983-84 season. But he ended the previous season with a 10 game point scoring streak. Shouldn't the record be considered 61 games?

Winnipeg's Finnish goalie Markus Mattsson yielded the first goal to Gretzky as an Oiler. Gretzky scored 14 seconds into the 2nd period on November 2, 1978, his first game as an Oiler. Gretzky had just been acquired from the Indianapolis Racers who had to sell the junior phenom due to financial problems incurred by owner Nelson Skalbania.

Mattsson got his revenge on Wayne in the NHL more then five years later. By then he was a goalie for the Los Angeles Kings. Mattson was in the nets for the game on January 28, 1984. That was the night that Gretzky's incredible record 51 point scoring streak came to an end.

Other than those two moments involving The Great One, Mattsson is all but forgotten about other than being the answer to a couple of good trivia questions.

Mattsson got an assist from teammate Dave Taylor in ending Gretzky's famous streak. About a week earlier, Taylor slammed Gretzky with a devastating but clean hit. Gretzky suffered a severe shoulder bruise.Had his record breaking streak not been on the line, Gretzky almost certainly would have stopped playing. But he soldiered on, extending the streak by three games (including a 2 goal, 4 point, 1 armed performance against Vancouver in game 50). After getting shutout in game 52, Gretzky did sit out the next six games to recover from the injury. But, as the league's biggest draw, Gretzky still participated in the annual All Star Game first! Every NHLer who sits outs the All Star game nowadays should be told this. Although he may not have gone had he not already planned a quick vacation in nearby Atlantic City.

Gretzky returned from the injury and scored points in 20 out of the 22 remaining games. He finished that season with an unthinkable 87 goals, 118 assists and 205 points in 74 games. In the amazing 51 game scoring streak he registered 61 goals and 92 assists for 153 points!

  5. so DOES any Coach, EVER, keep the goalie in the net in order to stop 'a streak" or do you always keep trying to win? what if the score was 3 : 1? what if 5 : 1 without a point? gretzky kept his streak going.. At 44 games, with an empty netter with 2 seconds left… feed the need

  6. With his third period goal, Mitch Marner has now recorded a point in 18 consecutive games, tying Darryl Sittler (Jan. 26-Mar. 8, 1978) and Eddie Olczyk (Dec. 2, 1989-Jan. 8, 1990) for the longest point streak

  7. No ugly attempts from you Mitchy!
So happy for you! You deserve the love from the fans at long last!
You’re a special man and brilliant player 💙

  8. TOP TEN 10 X point streaks in the nhl

#10-6 Past NHL players… WHEN HOCKEY WAS TOUGHER ….: 28 GAMES each!

    1985-86 Paul Coffey, Edmonton Oilers – 16G 39A 55PTS

In 28 games Coffey put together enough points to have finished tied for fifth in the NHL last year in points and goals scored by a defenceman. Of course, he finished the year with an NHL-record for goals by a defenceman with 48 goals, but wasn’t able to break Bobby Orr’s record for points, with only 138 to No. 4’s 139.

    1985-86 Mario Lemieux, Pittsburgh Penguins – 21G 38A 59PTS

Lemieux will show up on this list again, but it’s worth mentioning that this was just his sophomore year in the NHL. He’d finish the season with 141 points, more than anyone but Gretzky.

    1976-77 Guy Lafleur, Montreal Canadiens – 19G 42A 61PTS

The only entry from the seventies, Lafleur set a career-high in assists and points finishing the year with 80 and 136, leading the league. His 56 goals were second only to teammate Steve Shutt. The Canadiens would win their second of four straight Stanley Cups that year.

    1984-85 Wayne Gretzky, Edmonton Oilers – 20G 43A 63PTS

The first of four appearances on this list. Gretzky had himself an alright season finishing with 208 points that year.

    1988-89 Steve Yzerman, Detroit Red Wings – 29G 36A 65PTS

Yzerman’s most successful offensive year saw him put up the highest scoring of all the 28-game streaks. He’d finish the year with 155 points setting career highs in goals (65) and assists (90). The Red Wings won the Norris Division that year with just 80 points, which would have had them no higher than fourth in any other division. They had a goal differential of minus-three.

  9. OH, and by the WAY… I HAVE TO HAVE one of those GAME JERSEYS the leafs wore TONIGHT!! I'll take marners jersey from tonight signed, for my charity please MITCH!?

  10. To all the Marner haters, stick it. There's no question that he's an elite NHL winger. It's heartening that, minus their top 3 veteran D, then losing a 4th, that they have been able to amp up their collective game. Remarkably, the one component that many had asserted would be the cause of the demise of Dubas….goaltending, has been anything but, so far. Still not completely confident that it's as locked down as some think. I hope they're right, because it's been really solid to date.

  11. I've said it a couple of times but this team looks like they are playing great playoff style hockey, they aren't going around trying for super fancy plays, and for the most part don't allow the odd man rushes, ( well once they calmed down from the frost period jitters).

Congrats to mitch and samsonov on great games 5th in a row go leafs go!!!!

  12. Feeling really good about this team right now. Forwards, D and two solid goalies! We still need some more grit but I think leafs are a piece or two away from good things

  13. Movember keep the moustache Marner and Matthews keep winning games. Break the record on Saturday and beat the team that knocked you out of the playoffs….

  14. Toronto👊👊👊с победой хорошая игра, рад что Самсонов опять в рамке 👍👍👍✌

  15. Illya sounds so confident in himself and the team how we got him is crazy…. He was one of the big 3 Russian outside NHL yet people talk down on him like he nothing…. Goalie of the future for us…
