I don’t think Jones is broken. He made some key stops and played better than the Kings’ two goaltenders. That’s a really low bar but enough for Jones and the team to be able to easily move past this. Gru really does need to start getting starts though. The schedule for December and especially January is pretty hectic.
Hak needs to get that rotation going soon because the workload on Jones will become too great very quickly now.
Part of the problem, I think, is that both teams gave up power play goals early and got really scared of taking penalties since their respective PKs were both very bad. In an effort to avoid penalties, the checking from both teams became too lax, and that opened the offensive floodgates. Just a theory!
I don’t think the team even needs to be told not to play this way. They know they played poorly and more than that, sounded totally mentally and physically exhausted by this experience. They didn’t have fun, they were dead tired from going up and down the ice a million times because they could never get the game to settle.
In the third period, up 2 goals, it was obvious the Kraken were trying to slow the game down but either the Kraken couldn’t do it, the Kings wouldn’t let them, or some combination of both.
