I can see what Chytil and Kakko and Miller can do. I can see a path to them developing and improving. From what I see, Lafreniere is slow, stays to the outside, and underestimates defenders disrupting his plays. He scores his goals when he stands in crease. What else is he good at?

Laffy’s vision is unparalleled. He can consistently tape people with blind passes through traffic and at crazy angles. I’d love to see him get more time as the set up guy for Zibanejad or Panarin because he sees passing lanes that nobody else does

Watch his juniors highlights. You won’t recognize the player.

I mean people could right their college thesis on this 100 pages long pointing the finger at coaching decisions, lack of organizational proof of development, etc.
My dumb fan brain says one thing: speed.
If you’re not ridiculously proficient at your craft like some slower vets, the easiest way to get an edge is speed. Laf and Kakko are like trying to turn a cruise ship and their movements can be telegraphed from a mile away.

Prob beating a dead horse here but imo two things are true about Laffy – he has been disappointing so far and he not a bust. He is young and there is still time.
I don’t believe he’s been « ruined » by the organization, but I also don’t think they’re doing him any favors. In one sense, a team like the star-powered Rangers should never had the chance to land the #1 pick. That created a sure block of 1LW and 2LW with Krieds and Panarin. I think Hughes is blossoming into the player he is because he was thrown in the important role. And the devils stunk last year bc of it, but look at them now.
But on the other hand, the coach is focusing on trying to win now and not development, so we’re seeing guys like Hunt, Vesey, and Goodrow in the top six instead. Stubbornly sticking with his veteran guys instead of giving these kids a long leash and a chance to develop into their potentials,
Some will say they have been given a chance already, but was it long enough? I know Kakko wasn’t producing at 1RW but neither was anyone else. Their expected goals was crazy and bound to come. He’s been moved up and down the right side. Last season he was hitting his stride at 2RW and then taken off mid point streak for no good reason.
If Laffy doesn;t wanna play RW, I guess there’s not much more do to there. But the coach obv has a clear issue with letting the kids play uninterrupted in bigger roles. It’s frustrating hearing him say we need to change a few things and then do the same things game after game.
If it were up to me, Laf and Kakko would be playing top 6 the rest of the season , left or right wing, sink or swim.. The future of the team depends on it.

I mean if we’re not being facetious and judging a 21 year old at his least confident, he’s obviously an incredibly skilled player. He’s show great puck handling ability, a hard accurate shot, great play making, and is one of our best forecheckers. His much maligned skating is probably NHL average, and could use improvement.
But right now, his confidence is so low and frustration is so high the skills are a moot point. He needs a shake up.
In his first 2 seasons he shot 17%. He’s currently below 6%. He’s barely getting 12 minutes a night, and when there are penalties, can go 10+ minutes without seeing the ice (largely because PP1 insists on taking the entire thing)
Laf started the season playing well but after not getting the goals from the chances he was getting, and then finding himself in the bottom six while Goodrow and Vesey play 16 minutes a night, he’s either just phoning it in, or more likely, frustrated beyond reason.
There’s something to be said about earning your ice time, but honestly I care more about what the team needs than what the player deserves. We NEED Lafreniere and Kakko to take a big step. Lock Laf and Kakko into the top 6 and let them play through their mistakes, the way every other team does with a lotto pick.

Any chance we could actually see the kid do something and not justify his spot on the roster with something that isn’t sin cos tan ?

There’s no question he’s taken a huge step back this year after a pretty strong first 12 or so games of the season.
