  1. I'm a Leafs' fan and had no dog in this fight but I recall the goal very well. I was but 18 and it was a rare thing to see the Cup awarded late in the afternoon on a Saturday(I think it was around five or five thirty here in Halifax) with the sun shining. The famous Orr goal in 1970 was also a daylighter but I only vaguely recall it because I was only eight.

  2. I’m currently reading “Birth of a Dynasty “ by Alan Hahn. Great read about the 1980 Islanders, the Stanley Cup and, of course, that goal. Highly recommended for any hockey fan. I was 6 when this happened and seeing it again 38 years later brings goosebumps!

  3. This was the only game of the 1980 Finals (and the first NHL game of any kind since 1975) seen on a "big three" broadcast network….and the last until the 1990's.

This game (Game 6 of the series) was on a Saturday afternoon; I believe that had Philly won, the two teams would have played a winner-take-all Game 7 the next afternoon in Philly, which also would have been on CBS.

  4. All I remember about this series was a miff by the ref on an off sides call on the Islanders that they scored on. The Flyers would have won the game in regulation if the off sides was called.

  5. All the pervious years of frustration were wiped away with that one re direction by Bobby Ny, and a DYNASTY was born! 19 series wins in a row, a record for any sport!

  6. 40 years ago today the New York Islanders win thier first Stanley Cup. The great Bobby Ny doing the honors!

  7. What a fantastic announcer Dan Kelly was–especially when you consider how truly bad Bob Cole went on to be

  8. Flyers got Completely fucked over in that game And whether you’re a Flyers islanders or a neutral Party you have to at least admit that

  9. Maybe if Peeters had simply stayed on his feet the deflection would have been easily stopped. Just wondering. Sure looks like it could have been the case.

  10. I was only 5 years old and do not remember the goal but being a hockey fan for 34 years and love the game that was the best ending to a Stanley cup final ever.

  11. I remember this like it was yesterday. Huge weight lifted off the Isles' shoulders, given early exits against Toronto and the Rangers (uggh) the prior two years. Who would have thought the next time someone else would lift the Cup would be 1984. What an incredible team that was.

  12. I can't for I can see with own eyes when we win this year. I been islanders fan since I can remember. I can't wait to enjoy a championship with my dad who seen thier win in the 80s.

  13. Every player on that team should have their number retired. A total team effort to win 4 cups in 5 straight finals while winning 19 straight playoff series. Start it off with Kenny Morrow🥇

  14. As far as consecutive Stanley Cup victories, there 2 greatest great dynasties without a doubt — the 1970's Canadiens (4 Cups in a row) and the 1980's Islanders (also 4 Cups in a row). Why do I say that when there was clearly a team that won 5 Stanley Cups in a row (the 1950's Canadiens)? That should become quite evident when you factor in that before the playoff era began, all you had to do was finish in first place in your respective conference (East or West) and and you would automatically go to the Stanley Cup — (which means that in those 5 seasons, the Canadiens won 5 series since the Stanley Cup itself was the only post-season series). Compare that to the aforementioned 70's and 80's teams that won 4 Cups in a row who had to grind through multiple playoff series every post season just to make it to the Cup, not to mention winning it. In many ways, the Islanders of the 1980's may have been the best dynasty (not historically like the Canadiens who won the most cups ever in history, but as a single unit comprised of the same group of players 1980-1984). Why do I say this? Because they actually made it to 5 Stanley Cups in a row before losing the last — that is simply the most successful consecutive post-season run by any team in Hockey history ( 19 straight playoff series won ) — hasn't been done before or since. They deserve much more credit historically than they have received — but the books don't lie. That was a one of a kind team.

  15. In this age of replays and challenges, who knows what would have happened considering the Islanders were offside on the goal which sent the game to it. The linesman later admitted it. Now, it may have been called back and who knows how different the outcome may have been.

  16. I have seen a lot of great teams over 50 years and the Islanders were an unbelievable team.
A great mix of physicality, finesse and a work ethic.
They did it all in a tough physical division-?they lacked the luxury of walking into the finals injury free as their counterparts in the other conference.
Truly a treat to watch them in their heyday. They could prevail in any style of game.
