Edvinsson being a LD could slot in the 3rd pairing. Walman is a LD but is on the shelf to start the season. Klingberg could be signed but Hronek would have to be traded I believe if Klingberg is signed it should be 3-4 years at 6.25Million AAV. Berggren could be on the club depending if Zadina is traded or doesn't perform. Erne and Smith should be waived.
Klingberg I would think no, if Edvinsson does not make the opening day roster it should not be considered a negative.
I feel like the Matta 1yr deal was to give Edvission an extra year to develop. But if Edvission makes the team i think he will go pair 2. And Matta becomes a trade piece with the third pair being Walman(after he’s healed ) and Gustav Lindstrom
I know this is probably going to be ignored but the "advanced stats" for hockey are less than meaningless. goals above or below replacement doesn't hold water when you consider that defensemen play against significantly different competition. This is what happens when you bring baseball stats into a game defined by fluid possession like hockey or soccer. the raw stats are far more meaningful than these modified numbers created from merging a bunch of stats that don't show the entire picture by themselves.

Looks like Edvidsson only has to beat out Osterle to start the season with Detroit. Dont rule out Johansson either. Some believe he may be more NHL ready than Simon.
Berggren has a real chance to take Zadinas spot.
We had a -82 goal differential last year. Last thing we should consider is sacrificing D in any way shape or form for the potential of a puck moving defenseman. We need guys tough and fast enough to eliminate odd man breaks and sloppy 2nd shots that killed Ned last year.

I think the only reason you might sign someone like Klingberg, or any high priced FA for that matter, is if you are only 1 or 2 players away from being a cup contender. We are barely a playoff contender. So why would you get a aging vet under contract with probably some term involved which may later reduce your flexibility signing younger players who will be around longer.

I'm kind of hoping Yzerman pulls for Tkachuk. Klingbergs defence was awful with dallas but I do agree take him off 1st line and he will probably be in a better spot. 2nd line would be great. But can't pair with hronek would be a defensive hole.
With the signings up front a big question is what happens with Zadina? With these guys as wingers

Defense Edvinsson will have a legit shot in training camp. IMHO he will be on the club unless he plays himself out of a slot.
Klingberg? Iffy but if they did would that make Hronek expendable?
I doubt Erne makes the lineup over Valeno. Suter is also a possibility for being pushed down if Veleno or Ras play well. He only scored 36 pts (15g, 21a), which is just 2 shy of his career avg (37.7 pts). That seems average at best for 3c (and bad for 2c, which he played a lot last season). So I'm not sure why everyone assumes Suter is a lock for 3c.
Edvinnson and Johansson I believe could make the team out of camp. Go watch Draper and Horcoff talk about Johansson. I believe they believe he's NHL ready

If the Wings were on the playoff bubble this year, then yes. But otherwise bring a young player to fill this spot and learn the NHL on the fly like Edvinsson or another one out of the preseason. Do not need to spend. But who knows what direction Stevie Y is going.
