1. When it gets to a point like this, owners need to step up to the plate and use their money to get the deal done.

  2. the saddle dome is actually the third oldest rink. when climate pledge arena opened this year, it became the new oldest rink in the league. the building predates msg, and was built in 1962

  3. The Atlanta Flames will be a reality by 2029-30 season which will be the 30th anniversary of the Thrashers inaugural season

  4. 15:13 The Calgary Flames negotiations for tax dollars are not based on hockey arenas and it's definitely not just an Alberta thing. Toronto's ACC was the last privately funded sports venue in Canada. Since then, MTS Centre got $40 million, BMO Field $45M, IG Field $125M, TD Place $130M, Tim Horton's Field $147M, Videotron Centre $370M & Rogers Place $351M. Understandably, the Calgary Flames are using these stats to get themselves a great deal too. But if a deal was made in good faith, then the city shouldn't be throwing in extra costs last minute. But to keep things moving, the city could have waited until after the arena was finished to send the Flames a bill for the extra costs at the end.

  5. The reason NHL teams in Alberta think they are entitled to public funding is because their owners are a bunch of oil tycoons who are used to getting millions and sometimes billions of dollars in tax breaks from the governments they control. Naturally they cannot understand why this is such a big deal, and are so appalled at the idea of having to spend their own money, they will move the team to an American city where they know they can get their way.

It's too bad you failed to point out that the reason for cost overruns is largely due to the construction company's inability to deliver on the price they quoted in order to win the construction bid in the first place. It seems like since they know the government is on the hook for excess costs, they intentionally increase the costs in order to make more money off the backs of the taxpayers. Typical corruption and typical obliviousness of corruption.

Maybe consider doing an update on this story, but this time follow the money.

  6. Do the Flames wanna play up in higher grounds cause of the floods in 2013 ? They deserve a brand spanking new arena .

  7. It was weird seeing the WWF-E at the Saddledome . All the concerts are going to the Rogers Place in Edmonton

  8. Great video. Have you seen the new video of the Coyotes Tempe Entertainment District proposal ? The arena design and some other things in it reminded me of what you showed for the Calgary Next proposal with the look of the Saddledome. Here’s the link to that what the Coyotes posted of the renders. https://youtu.be/Qm9h0RP2WSQ

  9. Well winnipegs arena may have been privately funded (mostly) but it was 130M project. Which was more than Vancouver and Toronto. Arenas have become overwhelmingly expensive. A billion dollars in some cases like Brooklyn ect. 650M is a massive price tag.

  10. I’m a Flames fan but more importantly I’m a Calgarian. Not just that, but I am a 3 year long employee of CSEC so I have a foot in nearly every aspect of this conflict. In my personal opinion, CSEC needs to quit strong-arming the city for money. Public funding shouldn’t be used for a private building. The most richest owner of the flames is worth over $1B and all the other owners are multimillionaires themselves but instead of using their own money to get what they want, they will bitch and moan until the city coughs up the money for a new arena and quit threatening to move out of the city.
