They slot Tolvanen into the 3rd line with Gourdo and Bjorki and see how he does. Also Schwartz tends to get hurt, so he's probably a good insurance piece there, too. Lot's of options for them, and the additional depth doesn't hurt. It look like his defensive style gels with how Seattle expects players to play.

  2. There's no way Turbo is getting "moved out of the lineup" on purpose. But also another guy who plays a "no holds barred" style that tends to get him injured on occasion.

  3. Kraken STH holder here…

Your comments about this being an odd fit are entirely true. There is no room for him here currently. Seattle has a logjam at forward that has already caused a bit of chaos with Shane Wright. When Wright returns (they see no value in sending him to the OHL), the situation gets bad again. When Donskoi returns, worse still. It’s a good problem to have, but it’s a problem.

All that said, there’s precedent here. Seattle is a new franchise. They are still building assets. Francis has shown when a reasonable quality asset comes around for free, it’s no sweat off his back to claim it. It costs nothing. If Eeli fills in and blows minds, it’s a big win. If he serves a depth role decently. It was free. If Tolvanen doesn’t have a role at any point, you send him down and if he clears waivers, you keep the asset in the org. If he gets claimed, no big deal.

They did the with Alex Barre-Boulet, they did it with Austin Czarnik, they did it with Derek Pouliot, they even did it with Magnus Helberg after trying to reclaim him after he was claimed by Ottawa.

They played Barre-Boulet and Czarnik a short time each then sent each down…losing them both to waivers themselves. Had they cleared, free asset. They didn’t…no big deal.

Almost certainly the same logic with Tolvanen here.
