Dubas himself said the problem was term. He wasn’t willing to give Soup more than 2 years. He didn’t fail to “get the deal done” no the leafs just walked away in a smart way to preserve their cap flexibility when matthews needs an extension.
This "yes but he has cups" argument makes me laugh. This is literally people trying to justify that this could be a horrendous move for the leafs.

I would rather gamble on Jack than Murray, that is for sure. Having said that, Campbell at 5 year term? Yeeesh. I get WHY they would walk away. Campbell is a fine goalie, but he isn't exactly a "starter." Also, remember who is due an extension pretty soon? Yea, you need cap space. This is an obviously important point! Lmao.
You can't pay Campbell 25M for half a good season after a decade of under performance and another 3 months of under performance after a small stretch of good play behind the best team in the league. He was the reason they weren't the number one team. He and Mrazek were terrible. Better to pay two other guys on short term deals that cost less. Murray likely will outperform soup, so will Samsonov.
Just to put things into perspective… Thatcher Demko's contract is the same… and who would you rather have in net? Demko or Campbell?
I’m shocked that KD cannot figure this out. Murray is a huge gamble, especially at 5mill Samsonov is another gamble. Obviously, the Caps wouldn’t bet their playoffs on him. So why not keep Campbell & add Greiss or Halak & have the same money that Leaf’s have in both Murray & Samsonov. Of course now, those options are mute.
It's not a flub when the deal he was asking for is 5 X 5. That's a lot of years for a goalie who still hasn't proven he can handle a starters workload. But if you enjoy 30+ games from your backup then he's your guy.

To all of you Leaf fans thinking that Murray and Samsonov is an upgrade, or if you believe that Dubas wouldn’t give Campbell 5×5, you’re delusional. That reality is that the Leafs are a worse team today because Campbell wanted out of town.
