good article from jfresh that highlights Chychrun’s strengths and weaknesses and has convinced me that the Sabres should not pay the two 1sts + (so say Östlund, a protected 1st, and Olofsson) for Chychrun even though he could very well be great in the Sabres’ system.

As much as I would LOVE Chychrun, I don’t know what we could feasibly offer that I wouldn’t feel bummed about. I’m stoked about our offense minus the 3rd line, but we need at least one more defensemen and Chychrun could be it.
We have one 1st, three 2nd, one 4th/5th/6th/7th round picks for 2023. But I don’t know if given up 1-2 upcoming picks would even be worth it. Good thing I’m not a GM because I would fleece ourselves so hard.

The big thing with Chychryn for me is if not him than who else? This team is a top four defenseman, a third line, and a starting goalie away from being a contender for a long time.
Unless Johnson decides to sign here we have nobody in the pipeline who projects as an NHL starter. If we draft a defenseman this year they probably aren’t cracking the roster until at least the 2024-2025 season at best. At forward you have Rosen, Savoie, Ostlund, and Kulich who all look to have NHL top nine upside.
If I can take the swing at Chychrun with the expectation that he would sign here for a package like Olofsson, Rosen or Ostlund, and a protected 2023 first I think I’m doing it. I’m willing to bet on some combination of Krebs and guys in the pipeline to make up our third line as soon as next year. Would love to roll with something like Kulich-Krebs-Savoie/Rosen as a kids line light. We have so much forward depth right now to a point where there isn’t really room for everybody. Moving an unprotected first next year is the only thing that would really make me hesitant.

Power-Chychrun
That is a championship caliber top four that can play together for the next 8-10 years.
If Adams deems that Chychrun isn’t the guy or the price isn’t right I really hope that he has a plan to either trade for somebody else or add somebody in free agency because what we are icing right now isn’t cutting it. If it was me, I would prefer to make a move sooner rather than later and not waste career years from so many of our guys.
