Hayes is a good player. A rock solid 3rd line Center (decent 2C). The problem is that he’s paid like a 1st line center and Philly expects way too much out of him. Blame the GM, not the player.

Does not surprise me at all. Thompson was constantly dealing with it from the press and fans. I remember an interview with him from 2 years ago that he said he just did not look at any media.

I remember there being all kinds of rumors for Tage Thompson that were second and third rounders and buffalo was saying no. So forgive me if I declined to believe the source is accurate
I think it's fair to say it wasn't Toronto, because Dubas is exactly the kind of GM who likes reclamation projects and his scouts would have told him to grab Tage Thompson if he was actually available for a 5th. Given the Auston Matthews connection, there's no way Dubas would have said no as well.

Benching Hayes was bad enough, Torts was going WAY outside his lane talking about a buyout. If you're a fan, great, talk abouit it. If you're the GM, maybe not somehing to babble in public but your prerogative. If you're an employee of the GM, hell no.
Jones to Ottawa could work. Sens could send back Zaitsev, since CHI isn't going to want to retain salary for 7 seasons. Ottawa gives up their 2023 1st and Washington's 2024 2nd.
So Torts will get Kevin Hayes traded then the Flyers tank and get Bernard so he can another young player. For the sake of the NHL let's all hope Torts doesn't coach Bernard

Who really cares that Thompson could been got for a 5th? I think a lot of GMs might have passed at that time. No one, not even Tage himself saw any of this coming.
Seth Jones is a fantastic defence you can build a line up around, being a guy with a great defensive stick and big body along with great offensive instinct. He could really help Ottawa in areas they need badly.
He is just paid too much, and honestly if Ottawa wants to go for a cup run that realty doesn’t matter because he’s the kind of player who can be a big piece of a cup team.

First of all Kevin hayes has 29 point in 31 game so a buyout is stupid I don’t care about plus minus plihphea is a bad team
We had Hayes in winnioeg for a run and he was not very good. We put him on the 4th line eventually. Hayes is hit or miss.
My guess is Colorado….i don't see him going to an east team…. as we can see today Colorado lacks depth down the middle ironically….penguins make sense….just always had a "fill in" for stall
Calling bull$hit on that Tage Thompson rumor. He was touted as a big up and coming important prospect from the instant he got here. He was sold as the headline piece of the O’Reilly trade and ranked as a top 3 prospect BY THE TEAM (program handed out at the prospect challenge) every year from then on, no matter the regime. And he never truly struggled. That’s the most annoying thing you keep hearing about him and it’s just lazy talking heads not doing any research before they word vomit stupidity for the world to hear and the trickle down effect to smaller content creators from there. The Sabres bring prospects along slow at an almost snail like pace. It’s almost annoying but it’s lessons learned from prior regimes bringing guys along to fast, putting too much on them too soon and seeing them fold under the pressure and flameout spectacularly (think Casey Middlstadt being made the second line center after his ten game tryout the year before at the end of the season). It’s why UPL keeps getting sent down even after he has good stretches of games in the NHL over the past few years. Everyone knew Tage was going to take time putting on weight and filling out that huge frame and even when he was only having moderate success in the bottom 6 when brought up from time to time, he flashed enough for most fans to want him to stick around and get more ice time. He TORE up the AHL the whole time he was there and everyone knew it was just a matter of time. Don’t let people fool you. Take it from a lifelong Sabres fan. It’s bull$hit.

I am 100% sure that his story about this Mystery team, that was really good could of had Tage Thompson for a 5th is total BS. The Sabres have always said that because of his size there was gonna be a larger growth curve than with other players. It usually takes taller prospects longer to get their body to do the things they want and to add strength. They have even compared him to Chara in that sense. There is no way. None that The Pegulas would have moved out the center piece of the ROR trade for a late 5th rounder. They weren’t in a cap crunch and they knew he could at worst be a PP specialist with his 100+ mph one timers. So I call BS.
Flyers fan here. Hayes has never been great defensively. His weaknesses were disguised because he was playing as the #2 or #3 center behind Giroux & Couturier. He can be a physical force at 6 ft 5 in, 235 lbs & provide some scoring. This year at the #1 center his face-off win percentage & foot speed have fallen off a cliff dramatically. His turnovers & irresponsible defensive shortcomings are killing this team that struggles to get scoring from anybody else. Thus Torts dropped him to 2nd line wing, & almost no special team play, where his defensive responsibilities are reduced. Hayes rebelled against the move. His 1-man point show, poor defense, & bad attitude towards the coach's team-first concept of play hasn't been a good mix.
