Anybody who thinks Morgan Rielly is a negative add is off their rocker

The Leafs have plenty of offence, and Morgan is a defensive liability. He’s good in a particular role, but that role isn’t needed on this team.

What’s the possibility of playing 7 DMen and having Rielly play in a reverse Rover spot so 11Fwds and 7 D Men? Could work

Hard to say he wouldn’t be a good addition to any team, but I’d like to see his usage altered a bit upon his return. He doesn’t need to play 25 minutes a night and be glued to PP1.

The five forwards on the PP is as much about getting those guys experience in that role as it is about using a different strategy while Rielly is out.
Keefe wants to know what he has in his toolbox when the playoffs roll around. In a game where the Leafs go on the PP down two, is it strategically sound to roll five forwards?
So far, I’m not sold on the chemistry working. The article didn’t really get into it, and wanted to solve it by trying out Giordano. But that does sort of hit the issue, even if unintentionally.
The forwards don’t play that role of being on the point the way a guy like Rielly does who has spent his career there. There are many subtle nuances to the position you have to gain mastery over during a career, like gap control and attacking angles.
I think the forwards have enough skill and creativity to compensate to a degree, but it looks clumsier because the guys at the top of the blueline aren’t naturals there, and you can sense the lack of familiarity.
But again, that’s why you stick with it, at least for a while. Let these guys grow in to the role. Again, it’s about having extra tools in the coach’s toolbox.
Devil’s argument though? You only have enough space for so many and is this the right kind of tool to be spending time on?

If anyone thinks that Gio can play 25+ mins a night for playoffs games are even more stupid than I thought. Gio is still pretty good but the dude is 39, he won’t be able to eat those kind of mins. Mo might not have that impressive defensive stats but he eats up those heavy mins.

Anyone who genuinely thinks the Leafs need to get rid of Reilly is officially a fucking idiot
