Look at what Waddell has done with that defense spot. He is playing chess while other teams play checkers.
Traded for Hamilton, got great production out of him (some might argue rehabbed his career) then correctly judged he wasn’t a $9 million player in UFA. I’m sure NJ is happy with him right now but they might not be this offseason since they only have 2 established forwards under contract (speaking of which, that Miles Wood would look real nice in our bottom 6 next year, just saying)
Signed DeAngelo for peanuts, got a great year out of him. Didn’t want to retain but got 3 draft picks for his RFA rights (which is insane, honestly). Flyers signed him to a stupid contract and he’s one of the worst 5v5 defenders in all of hockey now.
Turned around and got Burns for one of the picks acquired in the DeAngelo trade + Lorentz. Burns now on track to have his best season in 4 years.
