It was a really rough game, and I genuinely think the penguins need to start looking at shopping dumo which is a bit sad but I do think they might be able to get something and then maybe package that with Carter. They need to get somebody else to make the third line thrive, so it’s not non-existent. McGin Is a good piece for the third line in terms of putting nice shots on goal but the penguins need a better possession forward on third line and a better playmaker. And then just one more good defenseman for the 2nd line.
It's really difficult with both Dumo and Carter. Dumo was an important player during the cup runs and players will live of those accomlishments. And Sullivan was his coach then which means Dumo is kinda bulletproof. The best we can hope for is that his contract isn't renewed…
Carter is a Hextall favourite and has a non tradable contract which means you can't just bench him that easily. He will have to play next season too…
It would be great to scratch dumo and take advantage of the cap space and use smith for a game or 2 and see how the kid does
I know it's not this simple because of cap considerations and whatever else. But in the preseason, all the talk I saw surrounding Ty Smith was that he was good offensively, but is too much of a defensive liability. Dumoulin–right now–has all the defensive concerns you'd expect from Smith, and none of the offensive upside. I just find it hard to believe Smith wouldn't be an upgrade at this point.
