My guess is they are spacing markers that help him determine where exactly the puck is on his blade so he can position his shot correctly. I’d also imagine there’s some type of grip advantage there in terms of the puck on the tape but can’t say for sure

Maybe to obscure the puck on his blade? Or some sort of attempt to make it hard to read by goalies? Not sure it would work but I wonder if that is the idea.
