Actually a great move by Yzerman. Has to put someone on wavers and there are too many diamonds in the rough in this organization. So, he puts out a >$5M liability instead, making it pretty much impossible for a team to gamble on this high-priced question mark. Bravo. Definitely something deeper going on as well. I just hope this kid is going to be healthy and safe in his future.
One thing that bother's me, is that Fabri, who is coming back from an ACL, is going right into the lienup. I mean unless he declined to do a stint in GR, how can he be in better game shape than Vrana? I believe there is more to this than we will ever know. Which may be why he won't be claimed. Well, Steve Yzerman made the call. I'm good. I don't question his decisions because to date IMO he has made a lot of decisions that people questioned that turned out to be golden. So If Yzerman said "Bye Vrana" then so be it. In Yzerman I trust.
If this isn't a reverse Stamkos play and we lose him for nothing, we'd better use his $5M cap to get a stud center. Jake had the 5 on 5 stats Detroit needs to compete, but more importantly, I hope he gets past this and can resume an NHL career. His ability to get off accurate shots in traffic is first rate and he seems like a humble, down to earth guy who cares. Worst part of this for me is it gives that broken puppy Zadina another shot at the lineup and that's a step backwards.
Perhaps whatever the reason for Vrana entering the player help program isn't yet fully resolved. In any case, I hope this move works out well for all involved.
