Tocchet is that kind of coach, he’ll stiffle the offensive guys to get what he wants defensively

I really really don’t want anything to do with Rick, I don’t think he’s a good coach and has ridden on the backs of others success.

Seems more like damage control to me.
The most plausible explanation to me is that obviously there’s this awkward period before Tocchet takes over bc of his TV deal. Rutherford is getting heat bc its obviously rude to make Boudreau fester like this. Owner wants to take heat off of Rutherford so they tell someone to leak to Seravelli that they’re responsible. Other connected rumor mongers know that it isnt the case and that the Tocchet decision has been made and just waiting for TNT to get its broadcast sorted.
