I thought this was just going to be the full game on some blurry screen like usual but it’s actually really cool to see games from when I first started watching hockey around 2002 now in updated clarity so you can really see the difference in the game today vs then.

So around that time, HD was a very small fraction of the sports broadcasting landscape. HDnet was the first channel to have high def productions and they happened to have a deal with the NHL. I believe this game was recorded and used as the example of why the NHL needed HD TV as the adage that watching on standard def just wasn’t all that great. As we know there wasn’t an NHL the following season, but the league highlighted HD as what would make the game better.
