People are blaming Petry (#26, the Pens dman closest to Ovie), but it’s not his fault, it’s Ruhwedel’s (other Pens dman, #2). Ruhwedel leaves the front of the net, going down to cover the Cap in the corner, who is behind the goal line without the puck. He’s not a threat to score down there, just leave him. When Ruhwedel makes this brain fart, it leaves the Cap in front of the net (Sheary?) wide open in a super dangerous position, so Petry has to cover him, leaving Ovie open. Bringing yourself way out of position to chase non-threats is maybe THE cardinal sin of defence.
It’s Ruhwedel’s job to stay on the net front guy, and if he did his job then Petry doesn’t leave Ovie. Petry doesn’t “forget about Ovie” here, you can tell he’s VERY hesitant to leave Ovie space, but Petry is left with no choice after a dumb play by Ruhwedel forces Petry to take the net front guy.

Not to discredit anything the great 8 has done, but it’s alot easier to lock him down in the playoffs vs regular season. Players are alot more willing to dive in front of shots to blocking shots in playoff games but its honestly not worth it for them to get injured during the regular season.
