I’d say burn the tapes but boy do they need their noses rubbed in that one.
Smith and whatever AHL call up Ruff feels like playing has been a disaster. Fitz might need to get another defenseman at the deadline to shore that up. Can’t have those kind of mistakes in tight games.
The good: Shar/Hughes/Zett line looked really good out there and I wanna see more.
The bad: The defense in general. Yeah Dougie got three points, but not a single pair played good defensive minutes tonight.
The ugly: Blackwood giving up five and still ending up with positive GSAx.
Marino can’t come back fast enough.
It’s actually pretty amazing that this game was close. With all of the breakaways and 2 on 1s we gave up they could have easily dropped double digits tonight. The defense needs to get their shit together tomorrow night.
Absolute fucking trash defense, beyond frustrating to have them not even clear the puck from the zone…straight up left blackwood out to dry..the d core played like shit, hot dogshit in July…defensive play has to be better than failed attempts, play simple hockey, you know like never pass the puck up the middle when attacking players are below your forward, and stop fucking pinching so fucking much…on that note, if I never see 3 forwards below the offensive hash marks I just might think I died…defense needs a bag skate, offense needs a strong yelling at, and a trash can being kicked thru the wall… »FUCKING EMBARRASSING »
He wasn’t the problem, but pointing out the interesting trend where every Blackwood game always has the same comments. The same critiques. The same defenses. It’s literally the same thing every game.
I have come to accept that Blackwood will look good for 95% of the game and give up a costly goal due to poor rebound control. It’s just who he is and why he is a backup at this point of his career.
I’m not buying any of the Blackwood slander tonight. Dude had to face EIGHT breakaways and still ended the night with a positive GSAx.
That was a master class in awful defense
Why didn’t we start Vitek?
We need Marino.
Our defense was so flat footed and slow. I understand you can’t hang a goalie out to dry like that and expect good results. I want to see Blackwood stand up more. He drops down on his ass and gives a huge kick rebound so often it’s really frustrating to watch him play. Again, being hung out to dry like he was is not fair. Miraculously this team is still In these games that they play sloppy in. But the playoffs will not be kind to a team that plays like this.
What an awful game from the D, this loss is solely on them. Turn over after turnover after odd man rush etc. We make it a one goal game with 2 mins left, what do they immediately do? Give up an awful 2 on 1. They need to figure it out, and soon.
Also not a fan of a lot of people in here blaming the loss on Blackwood and citing his save % as evidence. He was completely left out to dry all game, having to stop way too many breakaways, odd man rushes and grade A chances.
If I was a Devils D man tonight I wouldn’t be able to look Blackwood in the eyes. Not even tiny defensive mistakes tonight… just full on breakaways non-stop.
Hynes officially has more wins against us than while he coached the team.
Worst game of the season from the defense. No excuses for any of them. Even Seigs had a couple bad plays.
Graves was really bad tonight. I’ve singled him out because they kept showing his confused face after every one of them.
I, for one, am excited for the week off. We sorely need it. If only to get John Marino back and right this defensemen ship.
On the plus side, I had minimal complaints about our offense this game. I’m so happy Lindy kept the lines and I’m also happy that that Jack’s line produced.
For our week off, I hope Lindy thinks about putting some different power play units together.
In a weird way, I hope this loss is what they need to see that they absolutely cannot sustain how they’ve played this month. This entire month, they’ve been pinned in their zone and have been unable to get clean zone exits. Even when we win faceoffs in our zone we can’t seem to get it out and lose possession really quickly. Eight times out of ten the puck still ends up on an opposing player’s stick in our own zone.
They have to get back to their discipline and defense from November.
We got that fight in us. And its exciting that we can come from behind and we’re able to fight all the way to the end. I think thats definitely a necessity for a playoff team.
As a whole, January has been so much better than December and its good that we collected points in all but two games this month.
Tomorrow’s game is going to be an absolute doozy. Lets try to get one or two points out of it and tip our hat hat to January.
Horrible defensive game but an actual NHL goalie gets us a point tonight
I was there so it was a different perspective than watching in tv, but the defense looked horrific. Pucks bouncing over their sticks constantly, bad turnovers, getting caught flat footed and giving yo countless breakaways. I don’t even know what to make of what I just watched. We better get a good nights sleep because if we do that against Dallas we are going to be in trouble.
Wood looks really bad. It’s disconcerting. He was never the smartest player and always saw the ice poorly, but besides all that he was never actively a detriment. But he has been now.
Launch Smith, Graves and Severson to the 🌞. Single handly cost the game.
Just got home from the game.
Pros: Met Dano before the game which was dope, saw Bratt and Hughes score live, seats were really nice, Blackwood was as good as you could hope in a game like this.
Cons: 1 billion turnovers.
Come out better tomorrow in Dallas and maybe a week off will be good for Devils players and fans alike.
HORRIBLE
John Marino please come back.
I’m not worried about missing the playoffs…..But
If they think they’re going to get away with the « we played like shit but found a way to win » games in the playoffs they are in for a rude awakening. I you play like shit in the playoffs, you lose…period!
I was at the game, sitting pretty close so I had a good perspective of what the hell went on. The number of odd man rushes guven up by our D was prrtty abysmal. I think I counted 8 breakaways. There was countless times the puck skipped and jumped over sticks. Say what you will about Blackwood, but the dude faced 23 shots in the first period and it remained tied, and he was left hung out to dry tonight.
Offensive lines looked pretty good, Lindy kept Sharangovich and Hughes together so he may have seen the light.
The dog shit call on Blackwood for tripping that led to the preds goal changed the momentum for that part of the game. Absolutely trash. I was near the glass on the predators net and even then we could all see what garbage that was. Even the preds fans in my section mumbled like « they called that? »
Pros: The devils fans in the building were loud as fuck tonight. And at the end of the day, teams are gonna have off nights. Were what, 7-2-1 in our last 10? No need to doom, at that pace we’ll be at or near the top of the division.
In the GDT saw a few people singling out players which seems pretty unfair because everyone minus Dougie, the Hughes line and Blackwood had an absolute shocker. That’s genuinely the worst defensive performance I’ve seen since about 2019, and that came from just one pair. Everyone tonight was just not on it. 6-4 flattered us massively.
They looked gased, hope they’re not looking towards vacation and gearing up for the final game before the break.
Fuck man, we need Marino back bad.
Anyone think that Kenny has gone too far the other direction in trying not to be a Homer?
Obvious trip with no one else around…entire arena audibly groans…play continues…murmuring throughout entire arena….play continues
Kenny: well the refs can’t catch everything (paraphrasing)
I didn’t get to watch anything besides the first period, but lately it feels like teams have figured us out – FORECHECK. Our team is unable to survive under puck pressure. It has slowed us down tremendously, and speed a huge reason why we succeed
