It makes perfect sense because every player secretly wants to play for Toronto and cry when they have to play anywhere else.
Sounds like a case of superhero syndrome … the continued belief that the team is just 'one piece away' from getting over the hill.
The problem is that of course when it matters most their top guys get too many dry spells during playoff series when it matters most. Just look at guys like Marner; 6 points in the first 3 playoff games last year and 2 in the remaining 4, Matthews at least was able to perform fairly well, Tavares – got shut down in 3 of the 7 games, Nylander – shut down in the first 3 games and in game 7

A team that is constantly looking to shed salary, is not going to take on a player making $7.5. Reilly also has a NTC and probably will not waive it to go to the Yotes figuring he just took a home town discount to stay a Leaf.
If the Leafs truly want Chychrun, it'll probably be '23 & '24 firsts, Sandin or Liljegren, and Nieves as a start. Leaf's would have to shave money to make this work so add Kerfoot to the deal + a sweetener to take him (because cap space is more valuable than a player's actual skill).
The Sens fell out of the Chychrun sweepstakes because a deal involving Zaitsev couldn't materialize not because of their November meltdown.
Let's get real here. Arizona wants one player from the Leafs = Arizona native, Matthew Knies. They want him badly. That's all they really want. Leafs can't keep Sandin if Chychrun comes to town, no room for him. So a trade that fits under the cap and gives both teams what they want looks like this: Chychrun (+50% salary retention) and Bjugstad and 3rd for Rasmus Sandin, Matthew Knies and 1st.

First and foremost get rid of Simmons and Engvall then maybe discuss trades. They do nothing for the team's cup success.
Jakob Chychrun makes sense because he is a point/goal generator…. May not need a top 6 forward if you can get production elsewhere. I do everything to get him EXCEPT knies and he can fill a top six role next year

Knies, Kerfoot, another prospect and two first round picks will do the trick. Chychrun is 24. He's on pace for, what, close to 60 pts this season? He'll replace Muzzin except he's several years younger and he's way more talented.
Chychrun would be my top target even more so than a top 6 forward. His puck movement and his size is needed on the Leafs D plus he is relatively cheap with term. He's an immediate 2 way upgrade on anything else they have back there. He would immediately be there No.1 D man. Then you can swing a deal for a top 6 rental. I also agree that Knies should be an untouchable but all other options are open.
Chychrun is head and shoulders above Sandin I would package Reilly with Sandin for Chychrun right now.
A good D man like him could help the Leafs. The Leafs could live without a few wingers they have now.

**as long as he stays healthy** and is able to play close to a full season, which other then the 56 game season, he hasn't done. The most he played was his rookie season, of 68 games.
Maybe the Leafs can get Chychrun AND Timo Meier, and only have to give up Kerfoot, Pierre Envall and a first rounder! Every GM in the league wants to give their best players to Toronto for nothing. Make it happen Kyle!
