He isn’t only an RFA. He can accept his QO this year and becomes a UFA next year.

So we could give up 3/4 major pieces for someone who A) Ruins our cap next year at 10m AND walks in the year after.

If he doesn’t want an extension, i want no piece of this trade and the massive pieces needed.

I guess the idea would be saying you’re willing to pay more, but only if you get to ensure that you get the most return as well. Sometimes negotiations are like that, nothing’s off the table until the negotiation is actually done, but you have to pretend it is, to get what you want.

    What?

Are people legitimately willing to trade Holtz and other big money items for a guy we have 1 year of control left?

He has a $10m qualifying offer. That’s more than he’s going to get per year on a deal. He has every right to accept that and walk his ass right to UFA the very next year.

    Fuck rentals.

  4. Anonycron

No rentals. We are not at the point where it makes sense to give up assets for a rental.

You consider that when you are that one piece away from possibly lifting the cup. That’s not us. Not yet.

To answer this nicely……yes we are going to walk away with no extension. I mean do you honestly think we’re winning the cup this year. As others have stated the window is just opening up. Fitz is playing this smart.

Extension would increase the return for SJ keep in mind

  7. jdemerol

Sounds like Fitz has the best deal on the table at the moment but it is contingent on a long term extension verbally agreed to with Meier’s camp, and SJ is considering whether to let those talks happen or take the rental deals they have from other teams.

    C’mon Fitzmagic!

  8. BaggySpandex

No way should anything happen without an extension.

  9. mjdefaz

    I’m ok with this.

    Meier is a long-term piece.

  10. NJD fans, and myself, need to stop thinking about going all in this season. We are literally at the start of our window.

  11. Let someone else over pay for him as a rental and pick things up when they don’t qualify him. I don’t think we’re a Timo away from a cup this year, so why over pay.

  12. MrMooMoo91

Dam. Carolina office is pretty smart.

They can afford to let Meier walk after next season with the team they already have, they know NJ sees Timo as long term key player. Meier would be a boost to them, but not nearly as key. This also hurts their Metro rivals.

I suppose the difference here is – Is NJ ready to pay for the extra value of an extension in a trade. Will NJ talking to Timo’s camp really affect the value that much? Idk.

Idk what Carolina could offer, I would think NJ could outbid them and SJ should go with the better offer, but maybe Carolina’s rental approach is just going to make things simpler.

I think if we’re close to an extension maybe we can get the deal done first. But if the news coming out now is that we need an extension in place first, it’s likely that we are very close to a done deal for him, but we just need to extend him. But I do think the extension details should be done before we trade for him. I still believe he is the right fit and will be great for around the 8-9 mil ish he’ll likely get from a team.

  14. DevilsDadof2

Be prepared for the possibility of losing out on Meier. Fitz will only trade what is fair (or just a little but less). Mike Greir probably knows that too. He will also have a plan B, which may not seem flashy or big, but will progress the long-term plan

  15. McRibs2024

I agree with this move. Extension or bust. We’re not in a spot to sell off future assets for a rental even if it’s two playoffs runs.

  16. Lastguyintheline

He’s not worth it. Move on, Fitz.

  17. DrunkAndRunning

If he is traded to a team without term in his contract, that would be great for us. They will most likely be (currently) a contender, and will give up pieces of their depth chart who will be solid contributors by the time our team is peaking and is a legitimate contender/possible cup favorite. If we can’t get him with term I’m more than happy to let another strong team mortgage their future, since we will be lethal by that point, even without him.

  18. sapphires_and_snark

SJ should want an extension, too. It makes their asset much more valuable

  19. WahiniLover

I have been all in on Timo from day 1 .

I haven’t stated, but probably should have, that it was contingent upon an extension.

Our window is opening if not already open. He is a very very good player that we would control for many years. It makes total sense and doesn’t crush us (especially if the cap is rising as everyone says)

NO RENTALS = GOOD HOCKEY TRADES

  20. powatwain

As much as I want Timo, I fully support this stance and trust Fitz during this

  21. Mission2287

I’m good with that. No extension no trade.

  22. I’d rather try to win a Stanley cup now rather than within the next five years.

  23. jdizzle161

I like Fitz’s mentality. No rentals, seems like no overpays. Don’t want to be part of our long term picture, we don’t want you either!
