Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Tbh this is the best possible outcome –

    A) The isles end up close to 12th overall (say 13-15th) which means we get the highest possible pick that we could get in this year’s draft

    B) We end up with an unprotected pick in next year’s draft from an aging Isles team that isn’t trending very well at the moment and could potentially result in a lottery pick

Not necessarily a good thing, they probably aren’t going to give us their first if they’re sinking in the standings

Everyone’s laughing now until the isles win the draft lottery and pick Bedard.

    /s but not really

Praying we get the 13th overall pick

They need a centre who can also play wing, and has a fiery, passionate personality. Ideally, with significant term.

Seriously, though: if we do any further trades with NYI this year, one of the deal elements should be to “unprotect” this year’s pick.

This is going to suck so much for an already struggling Horvat. He was just getting chemistry with Barzal too.

Hearing a lot of people talking about their place in the standings but keep in mind that they could move down as well, 12th spot has an odds of 8.9% to pick 13th. It isn’t as high as earlier picks but still a possibility.

Miller for Barzal and Islanders next years draft pick. 🤣

NYI ends up with 13th OVR. The pick moves up to #3 OVR in the lottery, which is where the Canucks had ended up with their own 1st round pick, bumping it to #4 OVR. They now own picks #3 and #4. The Canucks trade picks #3, #4, and JT Miller to the Leafs for #34 Auston Matthews.

Matthews plays for the Canucks the following season, but after a strong showing in the regular season the Canucks lose in the first round. Matthews walks in free agency the following offseason. Pettersson, tired of losing, follows suit and refuses to sign with the Canucks. His RFA rights are traded to the Leafs for cap dump JT Miller.

Patrick Allvin and Jim Rutherford are fired and Frank Aquillini hires Mark Messier as the new GM, President of Hockey Operations, and Chief Executive Potato Snack Officer (CEPSO). Quinn Hughes breaks his nose 4 more times and retires from professional hockey. Milan Lucic is signed and subsequently made captain of the Canucks for veteran grit and leadership. The Canucks win the Stanley Cup in 2025-26 where it is hoisted by Lucic and Messier before being dropped and completely destroyed.

Since next season will probably stink too it would be super fun to at least, on the side, root for the Islanders to miraculously lose their 2024 1st overall pick to the Canucks.

I bet they’ll land the 8th or 9th last spot and give it to us instead of next year unprotected
