Any advanced stat nerds know why Hughes’ offensive rating flatlined?

I just can’t believe that Petey got taken so late in the draft, at 80th spot. Definitely a draft steal.
EDIT: And yes, I know that it’s the other EP that got drafted at 80, I am making a joke.

Petey is a top 5 centre.

I love Hughes and he looks to me like he’s playing better lately. I just want to see him use his speed more and play with more confidence.

I am going to get bludgeoned to death for this but I really think they should try playing Quinn on the wing with Petey and see how he does as a forward. Maybe even try him at center for a few games.
Imo, he’s one of those guys that probably sort of got stuck playing D because his bro wanted to be F and his technical abilities and skating got him to a certain level but now he’s potentially hit a ceiling because his shot isn’t good enough to be a threat on the PP and his defense isn’t good enough to carry him in 5v5. These are key skills for a top defender and he just doesn’t have them. Is he going to learn how to be a good shooter and learn how to properly defend? That’s a big ask. There are players that get drafted and given top pairing roles solely for possessing those skills. It’s not just like something pick up as you go along. It’s like skating, with some rare exceptions usually you either have it or you don’t. And I think that with four seasons into his NHL career and little if any improvement, we have enough of a sample size to at the very least say that he isn’t progressing like he should. Even with Tanev carrying him defensively we were down bad.
And while you could argue he’s good offensively, half of his points comes from PP yet he isn’t really great at delivering long distance passes for one-timers, doesn’t trust himself enough defensively to skate in lanes and attack the net, and most of his points are collected as a natural passing hub in a static PP that is created by his own limited play as a D. If you compare him with a player like Karlsson who is similarly weak defensively, the difference is that Karlsson has a lethal shot, can hit the net and sticks for rebounds and deflections, can and will skate into lanes, and at his best produces twice as much as Quinn does 5v5 and a bunch of those are first assists where he creates the goal rather just transporting the puck to someone who does. What Quinn is, is basically the poor version of Karlsson. The version where his offensive tools aren’t fully clicking and his defensive play is just weak. We have Karlsson at home. The « his career is over » Karlsson.
With Petey on the blue line though, and Quinn moving from the wing to the point, he’s exceptional. But that’s because he’s playing like a winger. At wing his defense is more than good enough and his skating is A+ and he doesn’t have to worry about covering for his subpar defensive play and can just do what he does best, which is playing like a playmaking winger. Think about all his great plays and most of them have come from wing plays. He’s a winger. The same could probably be true for him at center. He would get his stick in passing lanes, use his skating to cover defensively, double-up in board battles, dig out pucks, etc.
And think about what it would mean if he could be successful in either roles. We could use OEL as god intended him to be used. A slot would open up for Rathbone as an alternative to OEL. If Quinn could play center we could move on from JT and get assets in return.
And it’s not like it would be unheard of. Burns, Fedorov, Housley… It’s usually forwards switching to defense but with today’s modern top defenders there really isn’t much of a skill gap and Quinn is easily one of the most skilled players on the team and can navigate tight spaces probably better than anyone. He could basically be a bigger, stronger Gaudreau with world class edge work and pivoting.
So yeah, whatever, feed me a downvote but I think this is the move. If there ever was a time to throw a curve ball and experiment a little bit, then this would be it. The worst that could happen is that we tank even harder.

I love the Sabres and the Canucks.
If Petey ever leaves Vancouver I hope it’s to Buffalo.
