Ok. This post *seems* to imply this person based at least part of their decision to reject the offer on some spiritual beliefs about morality. Good for them, we should all be proud that we and others can live by whatever* principles we choose. By this reasoning though should it not be ok for Connor and Wayne to choose to take the deal?

I’m not condoning gambling ads, they’re awful. Hard to compare these two situations and say one is *good* and one is *bad* though, not exactly like w/ like.

  2. Double_Reward230

Do whatever it is that’s makes you happy! Betting is and ALWAYS has been a part of sports even in Roman times

  3. Vic_Hedges

Maybe they’re not opposed to gambling?

    Like billions of other people?

  4. MiloGoesToTheFatFarm

Who gives a fuck if they do gambling ads?

  5. ChampXs5

“Might want to focus your energy on outlawing child brides before lecturing the western world on gambling.” – Nahm Sahyin

  6. millsy1010

Oh wow so this guy is a better person than Wayne and Connor because he didn’t take money to promote gambling? You realize that gambling has huge revenue implications for the NHL right? Also like all things gambling is fun in moderation but gambling addiction is an issue. This is an all time dumb take.

  7. Pensfan66595

Connor and Wayne are just doing exactly what the league that made them rich already does. Take the highest offer and ngaf about the long-term success of the game.

  8. CYStevie

Ya Connor and Wayne should really listen to the almighty Allah loool. What is this? If you think gambling is bad, don’t gamble.

  9. Minute_Helicopter_91

I bet if they offered him millions, he’d change his mind.

  10. BronzeDucky

My take…. I don’t care if anyone in particular gambles. Just like I don’t care if anyone in particular smokes. But as a society, I don’t see the need to encourage it.

There’s a reason why cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV. And why cannabis companies weren’t allowed to advertise when it was legalized here in Canada. So why should gambling companies be allowed to advertise on TV now that sports betting has been opened up? For that matter, why are alcohol companies allowed to advertise on TV?

Frankly, if you’re in a “vice” business and you can’t make a go of it without spamming the world, that’s on you.

But since money makes the world go round…. Here we are, as a society…

  11. _stoned_chipmunk_

Mokaev takes money from sponsors who sell steroids. He also gets paid by a company that makes millions in gambling advertisements. It’s fake piety.

  12. SINY10306

Gambling is not a good thing. I have lost several thousand. Should not be promoted, like tobacco ads are no longer allowed pretty much anywhere.

Mutual funds / ETFs along with dollar cost averaging. Get rich slowly.

  13. youkmowwhatyouarefor

I’m not a fan of gambling. Takes advantage of the weak imo

  14. sleep-diversion

Good for you…..Allah, or God, or whomever she is or might be, had nothing to do with it.

  15. swagginpoon

Guys Austin Mathews is doing it. It must be cool.

  16. Luna861

Gretzky taking gambling promotions is a joke. Buddy must be hurting for money

  17. ResponsibilityNo1394

    i sent them a screenshot

  18. hockeyguy26er

I like to gamble. I don’t do it excessively, I do it for fun. But I never need to see an ad for gambling. And there are a lot of kids and teens who don’t need to be influenced by McDavid and Matthews and all these other guys promoting it. Very disappointing that so many athletes are selling out for this type of thing.

  19. CCSest92

The self righteousness is strong with this one

  20. joeflaccoelite

I’ve had a decade and a half of issues with alcohol that have absolutely ravaged my life and never once complained to the degree about all the alcohol advertising that bombards our entire society to the degree that hockey fans seem to complain about gambling ads.
Crazy how upset people get over gambling ads that are actually relevant to the game.
Gambling may bankrupt you but alcohol will literally kill you. Gambling can’t give you liver disease.
If you can’t handle Wayne and Connor on Zambonis in a bland joke ass commercial, imagine having to see advertisements for corona, Budweiser, coors, Miller (both high life and light), Heineken, etc. That’s not even including labatt and molson that are basically embedded in hockey culture. Get over it already.

  21. NufeeFlatlander

All the gambling adds a ruining the hockey watching experience for me. I used to complain about truck commercials but I’d gladly take them now.

  22. Coryperkin15

I’ve got an idea here to appease all three sides – the fans mental health, gambling outfits, and Bettman’$ wallet.

An auction is held behind the scenes prior to every game and all the gambling megacorps have an auction for the SINGLE gambling ad slot.

  23. brennic

Betting ads are useless. Get rid of them entirely, they’re taking up ad space for legitimate businesses.

  24. greasygangsta

Gambling is like any addiction. There’s those of us like myself who can look at a gambling ad for example and be unphased and then there’s people who are triggered by it.

  25. kazen97

My personal religion staunchly disagrees with the Muslim one on a lot of things, but I fully agree with this guy

  26. BillMcCrearysStache

I would promote little children smoking cigarettes for 200k in their defense

  27. tootnine

Is that a guy who fights for a living taking the moral superiority stance over betting? WTF does he think the fights are for?

  28. TootTootGusBus

I hope the number on the bag Wayne received for doing ads is higher than 200k. That would make it feel extra scummy knowing he’s doing it for an amount that he could find in a spare pair of his pants

  29. FatStupidOldMan

Gambling makes the game worse. I’ve always been against gambling ads in the NHL.

  30. Don’t care if you gamble. Just sick of the ads

  31. Dialecticchik

Gambling, booze, and pharm ads should be non-existent or very limited. It’s all I see during sporting events, well, and the BK ads, but you know what I mean.

It’s too much and sends all the wrong messages.

  32. EmiliusReturns

I am so sick of these commercials. Sorry, but Wayne cannot act. It’s painful.

  33. LouiErikssonIsAHoFer

in my opinion, if you let testimonial advertisements from celebrities dictate whether you spend money on something, that’s kind of on you

  34. ToofOre

How does their advertising choices impact you in any capacity?

  35. TheKrowDontFly

He’s right, but he’s wrong about WHY he’s right.

There’s literally a tag group by that name on Facebook for misguided quotes like Mokaev’s

  36. Unlikely-Geologist-3

Lol this should be deleted wtf

  37. ATLL2112

Bunch of fucking puritans in this sub.

You gonna fight against women on the broadcast next?

No one cares about your sense of morality. Stop trying to force your views on everyone else.

I guarantee if someone offered you $200k you’re not turning it down.

  38. votequimby420

wayne loves gambling more than hockey or his own wife

  39. MattMurdockEsq

I am not even religious, the opposite probably. No way in hell I would ever endorse gambling or alcohol or drugs. And I do all three!

  40. Mission-Persimmon664

Dont complain about gambling ads challenge level impossible

  41. Robotlolz

Sounds like it’s against his religion. I think religion is pretty silly, so big ol’ reddit shrug from me.

  42. aliveallday

Someone already said it perfectly. You don’t need advertising for vices. If you’re an adult and you’re interested in gambling, drugs, alcohol smoking whatever – you know where to go and who has what. There’s absolutely no need for kids to see these ads.

I’m fine with people doing whatever they choose, just don’t think ads are necessary for any vice ( and I have one)

  43. rollsoftape

Something needs to be done about this non stop barrage of gambling ads attacking our broadcasts.
