Rick Tank-it fully embracing the tank — achievement unlocked.

This actually makes me happy, good prep for next season by proving our ahl players are good enough

  3. julesieee

Maybe they should continue the training in the off season too. Petey and Quinn did and clearly it paid off. As for the others, well….

He may hate to say it, but I love to hear it

I always did like that Rick Tocchet. Even when I said he was the wrong coach I knew he was the right one.

  6. catgotcha

Shut it, Tocchet. The tank job is supposed to be covert ops!

If this is the case play Martin every game, Delia is actually able to win us games which shouldn’t be happening right now when the bottom 6 is so close to each other in points.

Better to admit it then lie openly when everyone knows it

Glad he doesn’t care about his win/lose record and wants to do what’s right to setup up the right habits and culture. I wonder if some of the effort will be wasted if we see a huge roster turnover though.

Exactly what this team should be doing. Enough with the short sighted approach. Get the young guys to play the right way and then supplement them with players that compliment their games.

Switch goalies each period especially if one is hot?

    Give the kids powerplay time?

Give Petey and Quinn some days off?

Do they still do the Grouse Grind?

I wasn’t overly keen on the Tochett hire initially (I thought they should get to the off-season and see who else became available). That said, he’s really grown on me. I appreciate his candor, and his honest assessment on the team. Rutherford, Allvin, Tochett… no one has tried to convince us this is a « real good team ».

Not a knock on Travis/Bruce, but they had to coach for wins first and foremost. They had to spin/sugar coat things as best as they could, despite the team being a tire fire.

  14. I felt like the first week Tocchet was saying this without saying it. He said when he got hired, he wasn’t even looking at the playoffs.

They said he asked Alvvin is this is a long term fix or short term, and they said long term. He signed on as coach. I also like how he doesn’t care how many coaches he has, he’ll throw them on the ice and have them working with groups.

As we’ve seen this year especially, tanking is a legitimate development path and the NHL seems fine with it. Tocchet has identified a hole in the market and like the true mercenary he is, he’s chosen to fill the role of ‘rebuilding team coach’. He’s assured of a long career as there’s always going to be a team in need, and he’s got proven credentials from his time in Arizona. His biggest skill is that he can look like he’s interested in developing a winning team and knows all the right things to say. /s (maybe)

Tocchet hasn’t made a wrong move yet, IMO. Maybe you’d rather see Kuzmenko get more minutes or something, but the broad strokes are all positive.

I feel like, despite how Boudreau left, Management showed some class by not forcing Bruce to be the one to tank.

I mean at this point it’s clear that we’re tanking. Which, fantastic.

But by letting Bruce go when they did, they were able to not only bring in someone who can tank by design, but it allows Boudreau to also get another chance somewhere else without a putrid ending to his coaching tenure here.

  18. It’s clear the team has not trained proper defensive strategies for years now. You don’t “need” Norris calibre defensemen to be a good defensive team. You just need to develope and maintain good habits. Toch seems to have a vision in mind and so far I’ll trust his process until he proves otherwise. I think it’s safe to say this season is a write off and to try to tanking for bedard is the best possible outcome this season. Assuming we land bedard and say a 12-15th overall pick. We can start building around them. Until the. We’re probably a bottom dweller for at least another season.

  19. sydster_d

If he’s able to speak this upfront about essentially tanking so soon after he was hired, it is clear that management was very upfront with him about what was expected and winning games wasn’t necessarily high on the list.

I love everything I hear from him. He’s much different than I assumed he was.

  20. goodbye9hello10

Well, Travis Green said they had a shit training camp before his last season, and then Bruce said they had a shit training camp before THIS season. IDK what the fuck is going on but starting early is probably a good idea.

So refreshing to hear this kind of self-awareness from the organization. Let’s see some of the Abbotsford assets (few though they may be), and get a better idea of where they are at developmentally. And just keep *losing* please lol.
