@Devils du New Jersey

this is a complete nonsense tweet. Devils reportedly offered Gaudreau north of $10m. Salary cap is going up, Jack took a team friendly deal right off of his ELC. it is impossible to build a team with this mindset and Fitz would know that.

  2. stanley_g00dspeed

This seems so short sighted. In what world are Bratt and Meier only worth $1.75AAV more than Palat.

  3. xBigTuna

Yeah I don’t believe this report for a second

  4. Skylightt

Good luck having any real success going forward if you have no elite wingers. Fitz would be an absolute moron. You can pack in the next 8 years.

  5. dishler712

I don’t believe this at all, sorry. Really limiting ourselves here if we refuse to pay anyone more than 8 a year. And I know the tweet says forwards, but we had no problem giving 9 to Dougie.

  6. McRibs2024

yeah i do not buy it. also jacks contract is wildly team friendly, as the cap goes up the salaries will too.

  7. roothockey

As others have said I don’t buy this for a second. Compete option based tweet. They were going to offer Johnny G more than jack money. They would’ve offered tkachuk more than jack money. They will pay elite proven players more than jack money.

I know Julie is in-the-know but I vividly remember her saying McLeod wouldn’t make the team this year so…taking this with a grain of salt.

  9. JimbroG

This makes no sense. What a bologna tweet

  10. MrMooMoo91

I don’t think she has any insider info just going off pass quotes.

Imo only a seed of truth here, Jack is absolutely a measuring stick, but Fitz isn’t going to let Timo get away for under a extra million.

Wasn’t Gaudreau’s offer from Fitz already over 8.5? Yeah Fitz will do it, but he is also establishing how hard it will be to get paid more than Jack. It’s business tactics.

Gunna be a difficult sell for Fitzy to get Bratt/Timo signed at 8. Would love to see it but i am doubtful. That being said if we got Timo and signed him for 9 and Bratt wont budge, youd have to imagine wed get a haul for him. I want Bratt to stay tho =(

  12. NJDevs30

Players can absolutely get more than Jack and I believe they should hear me out on this. Only because the salary cap will rise significantly. I think a fair approach is to take the percentage of the cap Jack’s covered at the time of his signing and that should be the absolute ceiling for all contracts moving forward. Bratt or Meier may not even go that high even if we use the percentage from Jack’s contract while factoring in what we think the cap will be next year

  13. Mr7three2

Jack is the best player on the team(and top 5 in the league). Noone should make more than him. He should also be the Captain but that’s a whole different situation

  14. JFreader

That makes zero sense. I would love to be able to keep everyone under $8M, but it is total different consequences, years, and terms.

It was Jack’s first RFA contract and buys only a few UFA years. He was also unproven and never played a full season. These other players are more established, older and you are buying all UFA years.

  15. BillyJayJersey505

Part of me wonders if Fitzgerald needs to be a little more flexible with this and more flexible with his « no rentals » rule.

  16. BillyJayJersey505

As understandable as this is, Hughes signed his deal when he had some struggles staying healthy and consistent.

  17. simplycycling

If this is true, we’re not getting him. And we’re going to lose Bratt.

This does contradict something that u/JulieRobenhymer told me earlier this season – she said that Fitz made Bratt a competitive offer, and that Bratt’s agent simply wasn’t interested in signing a multi year deal at that point.

  18. whojicha

« now that I’ve beaten out all the other suitors for your services, how about you sign this $5Mx5 year deal and make this thing official. »

    -Tom Fitzgerald, apparently.

If I was Mike Grier and I went through all of these negotiations for Tom Fitzgerald to stick to some low-ball offer on the extension I would never speak to the man again.

Edit: to clarify, I think this tweet is ridiculous.

  19. Kornja81

Except Fitz went all in with Jacks contract and bet that he’d be worth more. If he were to hit Ufa, jack is easily at 11+ mil.

  20. hotstickywaffle

I don’t believe this is true, but it’s a good general philosophy, you just can’t be strict about specific numbers. The Leafs are always having to shuffle deck chairs because they paid huge money to a few guys and they just don’t have the cap to properly fill out the rest of the roster. The cap will go up, but there might be a lock out soon and who knows what that might do to the cap.

  21. falaris

I’m not sure they are adamant about Jack Hughes being the measuring stick, but I’m sure they are adamant about a number right around there anyway otherwise they cannot fit Bratt in as well PLUS continue to ice a truly contending team with solid depth over the next few years.

  22. sanbaba

Works for me, Meier sounds like a dbag let’s move on
