No offense but I’d rather Bedard or atleast a top pick than over performing goalies and depth players
Edit: Look at the recent Cup winners, only St-Louis didn’t tank for multiple years in building their core and they’re the only team without a true “superstar”

This explains why tanking (despite its having an upside) is a BAD idea.
But no no guys, this is all bad you see, it’s way more important that we have a 91.5 percent chance to not draft Bedard instead of a 94 percent chance not to draft Bedard.

I’m really excited about the future of this team. I don’t know if we’ll fight for the playoffs next year looking how strong the division is, but at least they’ll give us a show.

And Marty St Louis, the guy who never stopped trying, is a Montréal Canadiens. No one can expect that man, who’s been told all his life he’ll never make it, to look his players in the eyes and tell them it’s okay the lose against a bottom feeder like the Sharks, cause they *might* get a better player next year
Small story time.. My sister works for the MLSE and I went to the last leafs vs habs game where they lost 5-1. I was invited to participate at the fist bump program where you get to see the player up close as they go on the ice and give them fist bump. Since there are of course not as much habs fan going for such program during away game, I was one of three up close to them.
I was shocked to see their human side and the players singing and joking around. I saw Drouin with a big smile on his face speaking french to Harvey Pinard. Motembault with a big smile on his face giving us a wink. I totally understand Marty’s comment here after that experience. They were just all vibing to the music laughing and enjoying life even though they were losing 3-1 entering the third period.
The energy around this era of the team is so starkly different from the Bergevin days, it’s really great. I hope the team can get back to being competitive soon because I think this group really enjoys playing with and for each other in a way I haven’t seen on the Habs maybe ever.

Habs gave the Sharks (a team that is tanking) 20 high danger chances. Habs had 7.
Coach getting credit for how the goalies perform is not something new in the NHL.
If the draft were held right now, Habs are in 8th (worst) spot, Panthers are in 14th. Canadiens will get two good players from this strong draft, no matter what, to add to our young guns. I hate the tanking idea – for any team – but i remember Toronto leaving Marner, Nylander down on the Marlies so they weren’t contaminated with the losing culture of the Leafs back then. That is about the time the league made it not so attractive to tank, as they hold a lottery and you can move up or down based on that draw from where you finish.

Far better to give the young guns lots of ice time, figure out mistakes on defence, goal, offence – and hopefully play meaningful games. not playoff meaningful, but at least close games, win lose or draw.
I cringed when they were losing 9-1 a while back, but they have looked like a decent team, even with injuries all over the place.

My take is this: You can’t expect guys like Pezetta, Belzile, RHP etc… to not try their hardest every game because it’s their dream/career that’s in play. They don’t care if the Habs draft Bedard cause they might not be there when he gets there.
I think the culture thing is important not just for now but for the upcoming guys like Roy, Mesar, Hutson, Farrell, etc… to soak up that winning culture and play the right way on the ice. And if we draft outside of the top 5? Well that’s HuGo’s jobs to take a middling team and make it into a contender, I would hope that their plan isn’t just to rely on drafting a generational talent to maybe carry them to victory.
Well Marty, sure hope in 3 years this pays off. I really do.
Putting a lot of stock in this winning mentality schtick. I just hope in 3 years I can look back and truely say it was worth it for this team.
