It’s friday night in Edmonton. Bones is speaking to the media.
A question comes from the press gallery. « Can we get an update on the injuries? »
« Dubois is taking a holiday in Montreal to heal his lower body. Perfetti is still dead. The Apples have rotten. And someone left a piece of Lego at the door to the the locker room so everyone is playing injured tonight. Stan will be playing second line centre. »
A gloom falls over the press and Bones takes the chance to exit stage left.
Cut to warm ups.
The team looks glum. Not a single puck has hit the open net in warm ups. Stan looks somehow bigger like he had put on 10 pounds in preparation for his chance at centre. Pionk takes a clapper from the point, missing high. « Damn it! » He yells, « Is that goal regulation size or what?Jeez! ».
The rest of the team doesn’t even notice. It’s just par for the course. They finish up and get set. The Ehlers – Stan – Niederreiter line takes to the ice for faceoff against McDavid. The mood is flat.
The puck is dropped but neither player tries to win. The gloves are dropped. McDavid and Stan circle each other. They take off their helmets before coming together. They come together, both missing their first punch and grabbing the other by the jersey. As they wrestle to get free there is a flash of orange where there should have been white. They spin rapidly until they are in a heap on the ice. Three refs crowd around trying to separate the two players. As they separate a confused murmur comes over the crowd. Somehow the two players switched jerseys during the fight. The murmur intensifies as a hooded figure walks onto the ice.
As they approach centre ice it becomes apparent there is a microphone in their hand. The lights suddenly cut out but this figure remains illuminated by a bright spotlight. Complete silence comes over the crowd as they raise the microphone.
« The Winnipeg Jets » a man’s voice begins in little more than a whisper, « have traded Logan Stanley to the Edmonton Oilers for Connor McDavid ».
The lights turn on and there is suddenly deafening music. As the crowd struggles to compose themselves to this assault on the senses they hear cheering from the ice. When they can finally see again, all they can make out is a man dancing at centre ice and a commotion at the Jets bench. Hopefully we see a line up with a new name or two in the return leg of this game
