Soccer is, and always has been, extremely popular in St. Louis. It’s kind of ridiculous that it’s taken this long to get an MLS team.

I remember going to steamers games as a kid in the old barn. Was always packed.

I haven’t thought of indoor soccer in 20+ years. This mention of the steamers and my brain immediately said – Slobo Illijefski (I’m 99.9% sure I spelled that wrong) was the goalie.

  4. I’ve never heard of that team, I hope they moved to Cleveland at some point.

It’s a shame the current Ambush team in St. Charles doesn’t get a ton of exposure. Indoor soccer is still fairly popular around here but the pro league isn’t near as big as it once was

Loved Preki and the storm too! Played on the field a couple times during intermissions as a kid. Those games were packed and always a blast

I used to get free tickets to the Ambush games for being on the honor roll in elementary school

  8. Cheaper tix and fewer home games than the NHL had helped out a lot too to drive the avg attendance up.

My friends and I loved going to Steamers games, it was a blast. Great sports environment for kids. We had more fun at those games than Cards or Blues games. Miss that.

I was at the game when Tony Glavine’s career was ended by slipping on a seam in the rug and shredding his knee. Don’t remember the details if the ice had fully melted yet or if it was just a weird coincidence, but I do remember it being a night game when the Blues had played a day game in the same day back in the Old Barn

Steamers game was my first pro sport game live when I was a child! Then the BLUES for every pro sporting event until high-school.

I figured the Steamers would have been from Ohio.

Funny this is posted because St. Louis CITY will outdraw the Blues going forward (due to the size of the new MLS stadium being larger than Enterprise Arena).

I have a vague memory of former Blue Peter Zezel playing or trying out for the Steamers.

[A quick glance at his wikipedia page shows he was drafted by the Toronto Blizzard,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Zezel) and played for a few other teams at certain points in his career.
