Professional sports are filled with some of the funniest ironies. I absolutely, completely understand that professional athletes of all kinds are wired marrow-deep to win, and so they will always try to win and if it helps them win they’ll twist anything they can into motivation to perform.
But that all said, as a fan and not an athlete… it’s sad and hilarious to watch our players go out there every year and stink it up, and then just when winning *literally loses all ability to help their own organisation*, they start tearing off wins. But the real reason it’s so sad and so hilarious is that it’s almost like they’re proud to be doing it. As if at this time every season, « sticking it to the front office » and all the haters becomes a stronger motivation than winning in the fall ever was, and they go out there and give everything they’ve got to win games and actively limit the ability of their team to capitalise on a season in which playoffs are not possible.
If this team got Bedard or Fantilli or Carlsson… the future of every player who remains a Canuck immediately improves. And yet there they are; grinding out every win and loving it even though they’re hurting their own futures… because I suppose to them it proves something to the world… that they’re a good team or something. Like maybe people will think that it’s just bad luck that every April they’re playing golf.
