Oh, ain’t that the way the story goes for Detroit sports?

This is exactly the zone I was afraid of.

Just really confuses me what the plan was this season. I find it hard to believe Yzerman thought that this core + prospect pool could actually feasibly compete for a cup this year and they don’t exactly have anyone in the system looking like a true difference maker.

It sucks because this draft is so stacked allegedly and for some reason the Wings decided this is the year they randomly want to « be better » but like, what does it gain the team? A slightly less depressing year for the prospects? Just seems like it set the team back as now they have little to no chance of drafting a difference maker this year while they barely made any forward progress. They delayed the collapse of the season by like a month.

I just hope Yzerman has a plan to snag a top-line forward from somewhere because the future doesn’t look super promising without one.

This team is stuck in purgatory.

No game breaking talent on the roster or in the prospect pool.

What we have is no elite, no game breaking, what we get is a little better than average.

People do realize that with the lottery even if we tanked we aren’t guaranteed Bedard, right? Last time we had a historically bad season and were the worst team in the league…we picked 4th…and got Raymond. Why are we hung up on this idea that we are going to suck until we get a first overall pick? Edmonton sucked for years and got 1st overall after 1st overall. I don’t get why this sub thinks everyone outside of the top 3 picks is going to suck.

As much as people think that tanking year after year is the fastest way for a rebuild don’t know about the Arizona Coyotes. Hell, the oilers had something stupid like 6 #1 overall picks and still sucked for 8 years. For all the teams tanking most of them won’t pick in top 5. Yzermen said in a recent interview that « deep drafts » aren’t really a thing.

Yzer said he’s building from goalie on out, cossa, sieder, edvisson, wallman, might be good pieces. So next is finding top fwd talent. You can’t tank your way to a top 3 pick so picks 4-20 are all really the same odds of finding a good player.

Yzer needed to resign Larkin, the team needed to improve because why would players resign if there’s really no fwd movement. Plus this is still a business and the team needs ticket revinue.

So it’s not as bad as it seems.

Listening to WWP and they said watch. Isles will make it in by one and then go all the way to the final four and our hopeful mid round pick becomes 29th. And I laughed and cried at the same time.

Thats what happens when you buy in the offseason to push the team forward (during the Bedard/Mitchkov draft) only to end up selling valuable assets at the deadline anyway because some of the more expensive assets that were brought in arent very good (i.e. Chiarot, Copp)

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with these terrible takes. Do people think you go from cellar to playoffs without a few mid years? IMO, this last season was a significant improvement and we’ve gotten some really good picks in return for players that have overperformed or weren’t going to re-sign. The arrow is pointed up and I don’t see us sitting in this zone much longer, especially as many of the current contending Atlantic teams who mortgaged their future to win now end up with dry prospect pools in a few years.

Elite PP #1 member Alex Chiasson is going to lead us to the playoffs this year. Watch

  12. BellsBeerBestBeer

Well we have proven that having the worst record in the league will not get us the first overall pick so fuckit

  13. Littlestguru88

To be honest most years I would be pissed we’re not in full tank mode but it was refreshing and I was happy to see us at least have a chance at making a run. Obviously he fell short but ever since the All-Star break it was a lot of fun hockey and refreshing to actually watch some meaningful games

  14. Jimmy_herrings_weed

Meh. This is on point for what I expected from them this season.

  15. MemeLordOverKill

Don’t care, we were never getting Bedard and a late(ish) season playoff push is great for the younger players.

  16. detroitspartan2

This is a stupid index. It’s just teams that are projected to finish 8-12 from last

  17. kermitthefrog57

Honestly I’m just enjoying every win we get, there’s a slow progression from bottom feeder to contender. We don’t need to be all in or tank completely every year. I believe in our front office

  18. gasplugsetting3

Whatever, I never get my hopes up for draft lottery luck anyway. Cade Cunningham used up our first pick fortune, so this city wont be due for a 1overall for another 20 years.

  19. Clean_Command_4897

I wish we admitted defeat way earlier in the season. I know Stevie wanted to win some games after being embarrassed last year, but come on, we were nowhere near being a Stanley cup team even when were on our streak.

  20. Shovelfuckurforehead

    We’re #1
    We’re #1
    We’re #1

  21. ProtoMan3

At least you guys aren’t Vancouver fans. Probably the one fanbase who feels worse.

Canucks are at 84%, the only two teams higher are the Red Wings and Blues. Both of those teams traded away players for multiple first round picks, Vancouver traded away picks for other players.

  22. non_target_eh

I’d be fine with #6… with the #6 pick the Detroit red wings select from the USA National Development program – Will Smith

  23. It’s a lot sadder for teams without a bunch of picks, though. Detroit having 2 firsts and 3 seconds really blunts the pain. Not to mention they could throw in Boston’s pick next year.

If they have a player they really want to target (outside the top 4, which probably are not being traded, so maybe a center like Will Smith), they could trade up and get them. Or they could hang back and fill pretty much every single weakness in the organizational chart.

    Not feeling very sad, tbh.

  24. jarvek7

That does suck. We might also call this the « you’re totally fucked » spot. But hey, we’re #1 at something!

  25. Troub313

Oh man, I can definitely confirm that I’m fucking sad.
