One of the biggest criticisms of Tocchet off the bat was why would the Canucks get rid of coach with one of the best regular season records in NHL history for a coach with a losing one.
Hes a great coach. Big part of the pens back to back cup wins
Watching this team finish checks is great to see. Most players cant get into a game without putting on a big hit or receiving one.
They did the same with Bruce Boudreau last season. Let’s see if it lasts.
Looks like Tocchet is teaching how to send a missile to destroy the "TANK".
If I remember correctly, the players "bought in" to what Bruce Boudreau was saying last year, too. It doesn't mean anything. Most teams go on a bit of a run after a coaching change. Compared to the way they reacted when Bruce took over, this is nothing.
They've gone from a team contending for Bedard too still not being a playoff team, but now they're potentially playing too well to actually do anything about it. Granted, it's not like an elite centre would move the needle for this team. They need defence – defence that can play defence. Rick Tocchet is now experiencing, to a much lesser extent, what Bruce did when Demko went on his insane run to end last season. The team is being propped up by goaltending and it's still not good enough to be a playoff team.
Hockey is both about reality and psychology. Sure, you have to have a belief in your abilities as a team and be confident in what you can do, but you also need the ability in the first place. The Canucks have a worse defence than the Oilers did in the 80s. I'm not talking about offensively. They had Paul Coffey. The guy was point-getting machine. But they also had Charlie Huddy, Kevin Lowe and Steve Smith highlighting their stay at home blue line. Marty McSorley wasn't terrible defensively either. The Oilers were known for their high scoring games and a complete disregard for team defence, but on paper, take Paul Coffey out of it, and that's still a better defence than the Canucks have. On a team that was known for giving up a lot of goals.
Yes, let's fall for this again……new coach next year.
Canucks always play great when there is no reason to, as they've already bottled the season – cursed franchise destined to be mediocre at best for ever at this rate.
Since the expectations are now zero for this season, the pressure is off. The Canucks play well in games with zero pressure.
Great! Please keep the tank rolling though.
