A couple quotes I thought were interesting:

Rasmus Sandin wants to set the record straight.

“I did not request a trade out of Toronto,” he said. “I had literally no idea I was getting traded.”

“What people don’t know is that my mom got sick in the beginning of 2022. She got cancer. She had some serious surgeries. We had a really tough time as a family that summer. That’s a big part of why I stayed at home, so I could spend time with her. People don’t know about that. That’s fine with me because I knew it, and Toronto knew it and they were fine with it,” Sandin said.

“It’s tough even talking about it. (Nylander) was telling me how much he was going to miss me. We’ve been so close since even before my time in Toronto. He’s one of my best friends, if not my best friend. He wished me the best of luck, and said, ‘Don’t you dare not talk to me after you leave us,’” Sandin said.

Ah this makes the trade even worse IMO

Ahhh man it’s first thing in the morning

  4. Tiemeupandomi

Yeah that’s tough and pulls at your heartstrings. But it’s still a business and he was still the odd one out.

Hopefully he has himself a good career.

changes nothing in my opinions of him.

    good dude, wish him well.

but i’m still happy with the trade.

  6. billyshin

Hope he comes back someday. Like Luke.

  7. Sindaga

I like Sandin. I like him as a 5/6 with some power play time.

Kinda like a Torey Krug but not as good.

  8. Sandin and Liljegren should’ve been the anchors of this D core for the next decade. Unfortunately, we’re going to be paying Rielly 7.5 until he’s 37.

The Leafs held 60% of the goal share while Sandin was on the ice. You don’t need to love him defensively, but anyone with half a brain can acknowledge we were a better team with him on the ice. McCabe is obviously better for the role we need him, but this was never Sandin vs McCabe. You have a 39 year old Gio that is done after next season. That’s not a good enough reason to trade Sandin. Make him the 7th D if you absolutely must, and the next year make him play the right side with the promise that once Gio is done that he’ll be playing 20+ a night. For everyone ready to say he can’t play RD, he and Gio have a 60% xGF and 75% GF this season in 130 minutes. I saved you the embarrassment.

Trading him for the 32nd pick and a 29 year old UFA that probably won’t break your game 1 playoff roster is indefensible. Just like protecting Holl over McCann, even if you don’t understand now, you’ll see in due time.

I’m wondering if Willie’s play of late has anything to do with Sandin’s departure. These guys are human and still young enough to be affected by losing a good friend. Tough business.

Terrible trade day 1, will look even worse over the next 2-3 years.

A Sandin Schenn pairing would have looked sexy.

    Mo Brodie
    Gio Lilly
    Sandin Schenn

I would have enjoyed that. Provide the muscle and defensive responsibility in Schenn to let Sandin do his thing.

He had no future here. I wish him well. Getting a first and Gus is certainly an acceptable return for me.

Also, I mean at some point you have to hit the reset button on some players before it’s too late. Imagine if he became Dermott or got an offer sheet and all we got back was a 3rd round pick

  13. honouraryscouser

I’m sorry but if he didn’t want to be traded then I have no idea why Dubas made that move. Baffling

  14. Jonesdeclectice

Boy there were a lot of people after the deadline who were **adamant** that he had requested a trade. Where you all at?

  15. Jumbofato

That clears it all up. He never wanted out of Toronto. And yet TO fans have been shitting on him about that since he left.

  16. It’s so funny that everyone here is believing he held out because his mom was sick. Why would that affect him signing a contract? Every player in the league has been granted time away to deal with sick family members.

  17. CommanderTouchdown

Huh. But I was told by some weirdos on this sub that Sandin got moved because he demanded a trade.

Funny how so much slander on this sub turns out to be false.
