It’s funny how two guys this fanbase hates the most (Messier and Keenan) ended up benefiting the team tremendously.
Like, without Messier and his stupid demands, we don’t get the Sedins. Plus with Keenan offering us Luongo for an aging Bert… I guess the latter is different since he wasn’t part of the Canucks at that time but still.
Fuck both of them but hey, can’t deny they both set us up for the late 2000s/early 2010s Canuck teams.

Having worked in decently high level lower mainland hockey in the mid 2010s, he’s leaving out the part where Keenan answered the phone with “so you’re calling about the goalie right?” before he asked about Bert.
Source: he’s told this story at a bunch of BC Hockey events that he’s spoken at or been invited to lol

Nonis deserves a ton of credit for this deal and refusing to make a terrible trade for Brad Richards to save his job (looking at you, Jimbo). Going from Auld/Cloutier to the Luongo era was a real sea change for this franchise in terms of goaltending stability.
I remember Nonis was a guest on After Hours not too long before he made the Luongo deal, and when he said he liked to build his teams from the net out, Scott Oake asked him if there’s a player that comes to mind.
Without hesitation, Nonis replied: « Roberto Luongo. » I recall thinking it was strange for him to specifically name a player on another team. A few months later, boom.
Luongo’s debut 06-07 season is still the most dominant season I’ve ever seen from a Canuck goaltender – he would’ve been a shoo-in for the Vezina if Brodeur hadn’t had his career year at the exact same time.

Funny how the sixth rounder turned into a player who got some NHL games in too, but I can’t imagine the instant regret he felt asking for a pick. Sounds like Keenan was just looking to make a deal no matter what so it didn’t matter

Imagine a world in which we never got Luongo, because of Sergi Shirokov.
Good to know we are not, in fact, in the darkest timeline.

It was a crucial part of the Trevor Linden trade tree where the Canucks snatched two HHOFers (Lou and Daniel, plus a ton of other impact players like Bert, Ruutu, Markstrom, and others) for the price of just one.

People should check out the [podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/6wF5gyaAUPYomXzLsUWZod?si=5777abdd4ef44a1a) this came from. I only saw one post on it from when the first episode was released but it’s a really great insight into the era starting after the 94 cup run up until the end of the West Coast Express.
