I know it’s not always apple to apples, but Faulk is also 2 years younger and 2.3m per year cheaper.
I can assure you petro is playing the hardest possible minutes though and faulk rarely is tasked with that.
I haven’t gone out of my way to watch Pietro in Vegas but when he was on the Blues, his puck command combined with the old fashioned eye test made believe he was the best player on the ice for most of his shifts. While Faulk is no slouch, I don’t get the same spidey sense with him.
Faulk has started 55.4 and 56.1 of his shifts in the ozone the last 2 seasons. Pietrangelo has been 52.3 and 49.8. That’s really the difference. Pietrangelo is leading far more zone exits and still remaining in the play and creating offense.
One day the St Louis hockey media will progress past using +/- to measure players. One day…
Faulk is a plenty good Petro replacement, especially given the contract/term situation.
No question Faulk is above average and until this year has outplayed his contract.
But it’s not quite apples to apples if you’re only looking at just offensive production. Pietrangelo is a two way defenseman that usually faces top lines and has arguably the best outlet pass game in the league. Faulk is more of an offensive specialist that is quick on the skates and manages the point well.
If you look at offensive production adjusted for time played ( points/60) Pietrangelo is ahead of Faulk.
