Play him with Marner & put Matthews with Willy again
I was a good forward when I played MJ, I was also one of our stronger defensive forwards. If I had two line-mates that were better at generating offense I would 100% change my focus when on the ice to be even more responsible defensively knowing I was most likely that best option. It also gave them more freedom to be creative in the offensive zone knowing I'm covering that side of the puck. It is pretty normal I think for those roles on higher level teams … this is def something JT would do and it would be reflected in his stats on both sides of the puck.
Stop beating around the bush. He is the slowest player and the worst stamina in the league
Perhaps add his 5 x5 defensive play to that question.

He can't keep up. Watch him skate he looks like is a struggle.
