Yeah it’s bullshit. They’re essentially punishing Bunting for being really good at his job.
You see Bunting has mastered the art of being a rat. He chirps and goads you but doesn’t drop the gloves, he is physical and will give you a bit of an extra little shot, not enough to get called, but enough to drive you nuts.
This is the part that takes genuine guts and toughness, you see this mastery leads to other players legitimately targeting you and at times trying to injure you. Bunting is not a large man, but applies this strategy against any other player no matter how big or tough they are. No better example than drawing the penalty against the behemoth Brent Burns the other night. Went right at him, probably half his size. KNOWING Burns was going to use all of his 6’05, 230lbs to try to punish him for it. And he did, by essentially manhandling him all over the slot.
The opposition is always whining about Bunting diving or that what they did too him wasn’t that bad, but the reality is that they’re pissed at themselves. Pissed at themselves for knowing exactly who Bunting is, and letting him get under their skin yet again. It’s not because he dives that he’s tops in the NHL in drawing penalties, it’s because he’s small and guys are violently targeting him.
Because even when they know he’s going to do it, they still can’t contain themselves, that’s why it’s a legitimate skill, and Bunting has mastered it.

Leafs need more « Playoff piss and vinegar ». Everyone has been saying it for years after every first round exit.
so when ONE player on the whole team delivers it consistently every game….. the management better stick up for him. Or else this team is just more corporate softy BS.
