Peter Chiarelli GM for the Edmonton Oilers 2015-2019 has nudged ahead of the pack. Hard to describe the carnage that he put the Oilers and their fans through for 4 years.

Glen Sather for the Rangers is here, he does not know where he is but he is here.

Mike Milbury.
Trading Chara plus 1st (Spezza) for Yashin.
Signing Yashin 90 mil for 10 yrs
Trading Jokinen and Luongo for Parrish and whatever.
Drafting Dipietro #1, keeping him over Luongo and signing him the worst contract in NHL history.
Trading away McCabe, Bertuzzi, Palffy, etc. for not much.

No, Mike Milbury is the worst of all time

Mike Milbury is bad but if you listen to his spittin chiclets episode, it sheds a lot of light on the islanders and their management as a whole at that time. While he’s made bad moves I can’t say it’s all on him. Hextall is just terrible. The pens have lost their identity as a team and his moves have made no sense.

Guys named boats after Doug Maclean in the Columbus days because « Maclean bought them the boats » on contracts that most of them would have never got elsewhere.

People in Edmonton still hate the owner Pocklington for trading Gretzky for $15 million and some players. The GM, Glen Sather stayed out of the trade. He didn’t want to be enemy #1.
Pocklington wasn’t the GM, but he still has people in Alberta and Saskatchewan pissed off at him. Thankfully I’m not one of them, it made the Battle of Alberta better for my Flames!

I honestly think the Oilers GM is the worst salary cap GM in the history of the league
He’s been handed 2 of the best goal scorers the game has ever seen who do the impossible thing every coach wants which is create scoring every single night consistently.
You could just surround those guys with big forwards who can crash the net and hit one timers for very little cap hit
Plus defence who can consistently have good positioning with good long range passing skills (I.E. both the Coyotes defence who had those skill sets and would have been dirt cheap who have been snatched up and immediately began being top 2 pairing defenders, one of them being a high minute defence on one of the best defensive teams the NHL has ever seen)
And a consistent goalie… which weirdly also could have been found on the Coyotes for dirt cheap. But no, Torontos scraps were more up his alley.
Or the Nurse contract
Or playing Ceci (a middle line defence at best, or a third line defence realistically) as a top line defender
Or keeping Puljijarvi well past when he should have been traded so they got almost nothing for him compared to what they could have got if the GM did his job and watched the analytics.
The only thing he has done right recently is listen to the captain and resign Kane, as well as the Ekholm trade which considering how shit the scouting was on teams with other underrated defence was a huge surprise… but I mean also trading Barrie for him was dumb because Barrie is the only long range passing defence on the team who could take advantage of McDavids speed with passes from below the hash marks in his own zone.
With the scoring performance by McDavid and Draisaitl throughout their career they should have a cup by now, but no. The GM can’t do his job right.
And yes I’m aware pieces like Foegle, Bjugstad, and Ekholm are working well. But Edmonton is still 28th in the league for their defensive statistics. That’s not a sustainable playoff team.
That being said, he’s not all that much worse then Stan Bowman was. I just think since he fails to build a consistent contending team with McDavid and Draisaitl leading the league in points as top 5 scorers by a wide margin, he has gotta be downright unable to do his job.

Not a patch on Mike Milbury at the Isles.

Highly unpopular take by me, but if you’re looking at playoff results as how well a GM has done, David Poile is a terrible GM.
In 39 seasons as a GM, his clubs have made two conference finals.
Two. Even a coin flipped status for playoff entry would have resulted in an expected value of ~4 conference final appearances.
