Podcast « Oilers keep it tight to beat LA Kings » de The Cult of Hockey
Faisons cela! Le balado Cult of Hockey. Par les fidèles et pour les fidèles, ce soir avec Bruce McCurdy et David Staples. Ils creusent dans la victoire 3-1 d’Edmonton contre les Kings de Los Angeles.
I really hate the King’s style of hockey, it’s like I’m back in 2000 watching the Devils vs the Wild. You need a lot of meth to stay awake for Kings games.
They should change it to 3 points for regulation wins in the NHL. For OT; 2 points for the winner and 1 point for the loser. This will get rid of the point inflation the current system creates for OTs. In other words, there will always be awarded 3 points in a game whether it settled in regulation time or OT.
Those name labels that follow players around are absolutely STUPID and obstruct the view of the ice. Anyways, nice bank shot past everyone, Darnell! That's one of the nicer EN goals we'll see. And Go Alberta, let’s have a Round 1 BOA!
Nice coaching move by starting DR and Kostin flanking Drai. Would be good if Klim can become a solid defensive forward, with offensive potential. It also seems like Woody's getting them all to improve individually, and/or they are teaching each other their tricks. Nuge is releasing quicker like Drai, and Drai has put his own wicked twist on his own Nuge-type no-look backhand passes. Hopefully Bouch will learn to neutralize net-front threats the way Desi does.
With their play since late January, the oilers should be first in the pacific going away. They need to do a better job of consistent play right out of the gate.
Like it or not and with the possible exception of the first period which was a bit sluggish, this game closely resembled typical playoff hockey where defense is just as important as offense and that includes solid goaltending. And, the fact that the Oilers are capable of doing all three vital functions with the added bonuses of above average penalty killing and a fantastic powerplay, this makes them a true contender for the Stanley Cup. Go Oilers!!
Impressive back to backs vs the Kings… proving this team can crank it up a notch with tenacious D of its own and have the patience to stick to it when they don't get the instant offensive payout initially. That is a huge step in team maturity. Eckholm has been gorilla glue for the defensive framework of this team…. Holland found the right fella. His salary is the best deal in hockey as he teaches the young guns on D how to position themselves ~ all of a sudden these guys are in the right places all over the ice blocking lanes that were wide open earlier in the season.. LOve watching Evander lead the team with 8 hits…. this team is a physical juggernaut this year. I think the Av's have some real competition this finals.
Yet another important game, down the stretch against a divisional rival that this die hard fan couldn't see because of "regional blackouts". God I hate this league sometimes. Why do I pay for a sports package as part of my cable subscription if I get a blank screen whenever my team plays on tv? Frustrating. Go Oilers Go!
Statistics for Edmonton Oilers at Los Angeles Kings for April 4th, 2023 Again, I am NOT in the Cult of Hockey's league for stats. They go much further in than I do. This is just a foundation to build on.
Starting things with my comments on the game and the three stars first. Main stats will be below that.
Odd stat day: I can't give you +/-. It's obvious they didn't calculate it right (example, Draisaitl has a goal and 2 assists, LA had 1 goal so the WORST Leon could have done is +2 yet they have him at 0, there are others that way too). I couldn't watch the game (wish I could have but not possible) so I have no idea who was on or off for the goals and I couldn't do my own stats just aggregate them from other sites. The other stats I can give, they seem accurate across multiple sites but +/- is out to lunch on this one on multiple sites (like they copy / pasted from SportsNet and SN got it very very wrong).
Changing things up a bit by going 3 stars first:
Draisaitl, Arvidsson, Nugent-Hopkins. This was a game in LA so Arvidsson got in with 1 goal. Connor (who only had one assist) took charge of this game with the boys after Arvidsson scored. He came over the boards like a man possessed and wouldn't be denied. The penalty Leon scored the PP game winner on (honestly his one timer has to give goalies PTSD. It's Leon's league leading 11th game winner BTW), was inflicted on Connor (Slashing by, guess who, Arvidsson so why he's a star as he's directly responsible for the PP Game winner against LA, no clue).
The first period ended in a 3 shot for LA, 2 for the Oilers 0-0 score. You'd think the game was boring and then the other periods happened. Nuge with 2 points (Goal, Assist, 3rd Star) putting him at 99 for the season so far (with 4 games to play so yeah, he'll hit 100). Nurse with an empty netter (getting him another goal and another empty netter, he gets a fair number of those for us (because none of the rest of the guys score a lot of them (lol)).
This was a tight game. Skinner did great. Copley at the other end for LA did well too in my opinion. Honestly I would have been thrilled if the Oilers won this 1-0. As is this really tells LA (and the league) that you want to play this way, we can beat you this way too. You want it more wide open we'll annihilate your posterior. Want to play rough, Hi, this game the Oilers had 39 hits compared to LA's 23. There were far more Slashing and Roughing penalties in this game's 10 penalties (total between 2 teams, some concurrent). LA is listed at 14 Giveaways with the Oilers having ZERO (on SportsNet, 1 on NHL.COM though it's not assigned to a player so I have to say they did math wrong again so zero again). Ridiculous. LA with nearly double the blocks of Edmonton (Edmonton 9, LA 17). Edmonton beat LA in the faceoff circle (which happens pretty much never) and were 50% on the PP to improve their PP to 32.7%. While Edmonton is listed at #21 on the PK I think most of that was before January 11th because they've let in remarkably few since (other than one game against LA earlier which we will choose to expunge from our memories as a nightmare).
They played Broberg 4:16. It's like what's the point, just in case someone gets hurt and he has to fill in and isn't completely cold? Kostin played 6:23 and during that time got a penalty (not good) and 5 hits (very good). What a waste for both.
Oilers with a big 200 foot game they deserved and did win.
Enjoy the stats that follow. Bring me the Playoffs (though let me see Nuge hit 100 and Connor hit at least 66).

"Rounding into playoff form." This team plays the heaviest hockey since the first heady year with Lucic, Maroon, Zach … This is a cruiserweight team with speed and talent. They can lock it down. They can outwork. There is not a guy in this lineup that is "other guy" … we've got a dang good squad. Oilers Bruins in the final … pleaaaas$ssseee
Ok someone check my numbers here. After 78 games, using the IIHF standing point system (3 for Reg. time W, 2 for extra time win, 1 for extra time loss, 0 for reg. time loss), we have:

penalties in the playoffs? staples dude you are out to lunch — cram some bologna down your gullet

So nice to have a group that cheers together and criticizes together when they deserve it.
drew doughty is still an asshole and you can exploit that
remember bruce: sometimes you beat the bar and sometimes the bar beats you
desharnais's got stick (nhl sanctioned stick)
tight checking game? boring. take out that subset? new jersey devils 2003
i disagree with you mccurdy: players hit other with intent; players absorb a hit
load management of the power foward. a good example was Mike Peca in 06. he saved it for the playoffs and was a difference maker that spring.

That's because Michael's started with statistics on how many periods Edmonton hadn't been scored on. To many statistics for my liking
1st PP unit not even giving the 2nd unit a chance all season. Incredible stat.

David, there is a lump on the right side of your neck. Maybe have it looked at?

Finally glad to see the fight and composure of this team.👊😉
What are the numbers concerning the last time a team had 3X 100 pt players in the same year?
Astute analysis as per usual. Sherwood sandwich is my new favorite phrase😂😂

Wow that ice must be terrible, I couldn't believe how many guys stumbled or how much the puck bounced around.
