Giving Sparks the job over McElhinney cost the Leafs home ice advantage against Boston that year. And it’s not even like Sparks won the job, he was terrible in the preseason that year too. Rare L for Dubas and probably his worst move with the Leafs.

Even as someone who preferred Mcelhinney to make the team at the time I can admit that would’ve been dumb. You don’t waive a young goalie who excelled in the AHL for a career subpar backup in his mid 30s that had 8 or so solid games for the team

choosing sparks over macbackup remains one of dubas’ shrewdest moves, regardless of the result.

If the Leafs crash out of the playoffs this year and the team gets blown up if that is the outcome, we really going to look back at the McBackup save on Crosby to secure the playoff spot in 2017 as the true highlight of this era
